Black Mesa Source finally?

That's really good news but I'll reserve my excitement until I've played it or seen some reviews. It is a fan project after all, so I don't have high expectations.

I'm a big fan of half life 2 and half life episodes 1 & 2 but I haven't played the original. I tried once but I couldn't get over the outdated graphics. I hope this remake lives up to its hype.

+1, though I did make it through most of HL1, and I wasn't a fan - the graphics were a part of it, but it was more just the majority feeling like long stretches of traversing linear paths broken up by not particularly captivating shootouts and platforming sections, and very little music or plot development (or character interaction, save the occasional nameless short-lived scientist/security guard with one of the same 3-4 voices and no personality), making it all feel very cold and empty to me, especially in light of how strong HL2's characters and (to a slightly lesser extent IMO) story progression was.

Sure, it may have been revolutionary for its time, but by the time I played it (like 2004 or so), I had already encountered most of its original ideas in other games that had ripped them off and usually also contained better pacing and stories. Still, maybe this fresh coat of graphics will change my mind!

I played the first half life years ago and I find it the most boring shit ever in that time. Almost a year ago I decided to give a go to half life 2, and I was really impressed by the game, especially because it was made years ago when that kind of games were not very evolved, for 2004 it was a great game. But nothing beats the first time I played the first unreal, I was totally astonished by all in that game. It was before the year 2000. Back to Half life 2, I was really enjoying the game till zombies, headless creatures and other shit came in, I lost all the interest after that. I find that FPS with zombies, aliens and that kinda shit is overused and quite uninteresting.

Awesome! Just heard about this a couple days ago, had no idea this was in development for 8 years. I just went ahead and re-played the original HL1 all the way through and fuck, Surface Tension chapter freaking rules so hard. So stoked to see this re-envisioned version.

Note: No Xen levels. This release goes all the way up to where Gordon enters the portal to Xen.

As I tried to convey above, a much more eventful/existent story and the actual presence of characters besides Gordon, G-man and a bunch of totally interchangeable nameless security guards and 3 different scientist models (a single bald one would become Kleiner, of course)

Obviously people who played the original game at the time of its release had a completely different experience than people who played it after HL2 and the episodes.
Still, I don't understand how you don't see that HL2 is a far superior game in every aspect...

Yes, the story/character development/dialogue/more immersive environment is what made HL2 a great game for me too.
HL felt almost like DOOM (at least the small portion of the game I've played), a cheesy/unoriginal story serving just as an excuse to take a gun and start shooting monsters.

As I said in the first post HALF LIFE FANS check this out

I've been checking the black mesa source site since 2005, every month! For fans like me, this is very exciting. I guess this new remake can be good for guys who didn't play the original one and are looking for modern graphics. Half Life 1 is NOT the typical alien/zombie story, it has it's own vibe, that's why it became famous when valve released it.

I'm actually still a fan of HL1. Sure it's mostly run'n'gun but most fps games were at that time and a bit after....Deus Ex not included.

I'll admit I bought HL to play Counter Strike (and Day of Defeat) and then played HL, but still it is a really good game. I would think most fps games made in 1998-2004 could use a graphical overhaul anyway.

“Development on Xen is already underway and we hope to have it finished up in a reasonable timeframe. Xen is going to basically be a complete game in its own right, it’s not going to be just an epilogue to the game; more of a whole new chapter. It’ll be pretty well expanded.”

BTW this game is supposed to be free...
