BLACK METAL ARHHHHGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I listen to it on rare occasions when I want to go to sleep.

LOL, I thought I was the only one who could "sleep" to metal. I actually can't go all the way unconscious to any kind of music at all, but I remember getting pretty dozy on a car trip with Blackwater Park (needless to say I wasn't the one driving!!!).

Now, there's 2 kinds of sleepy when it comes to music...1 is "Ahhh, I love this...sooooo relaxed...eyelids getting heavy..." The other is "THIS IS SO BORING." ;)

Opeth =/= black metal
Children of Bodom =/= black metal

This isn't even open for debate.

"Cheesiness" is subjective. Black metal fans think power metal is cheesy, and power metal fans think black metal cheesy. I've heard a lot of BM fans say that prog metal is the most boring shit on the planet, and a lot of prog fans say the same about BM.

Judging by the talk of "black metal" bands like Opeth and Bodom, I'd venture a guess that most people here don't have much experience with black metal.

LOL, actually, bringing Opeth up had nothing to do with black metal and everything to do with falling asleep to music. They're death metal/prog--I know that.

educate me.

the worst thing i find about rabid BM fans is they're so kvlt they can't even explain what it is to someone who's interested in it.

Most black metal kinda bores me. But most music in general just bores me. There are some black metal bands I love, such as Dawn, Emperor, Immortal, Grand Belial's Key, and Akercocke are probably my favourite band, but for the most part... eh.
There are some black metal fans who seem to be in competition to see who can listen to the most poorly produced, noisy and horrible black metal band.
And there are other people who are so desperate to say that they're into black metal that they'll say pretty much anything they listen to is black metal.

As long as its not hardcore or screamo hahaha but some is pretty good but by far doesnt even compare with melodic, prog, or power metal

Thank you! I knew someone would say it! Lol.

It annoys the hell out of me when people say Bodom is black, or death metal. It's funny because like 95% of the "metalheads" at my school (JUST at my school, mind you), say that Bodom is one of the two aformentioned subgenres. I personally classify Bodom as more along the lines of power metal; however, correct me if I'm wrong in thinking so...They're just so damn hard to throw under ONE subgenre.

What's even funnier is that a former friend/bandmate of mine considered Evergrey "Death Metal".

Someone fill me in, what is "melodic" metal? Correct me if I'm wrong, but music (in general) is any sound that has rhythm and melody. That being said, all forms of metal, and even all forms of music, are melodic...Yes, even screamo and hardcore.

i'd like to clarify what NSBM, BM, DM are and the differences.

Well I can tell u the difference between modern Black, regular Black, DM. Someone already said the difference between BM and DM. Difference between Modern Black Metal and regular. regular black metal has horrible sound quality and is nothing but blast beats played sloppy. Example Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Burzum.

The modern stuff started with Dissection and Immortal. It has better sound quality, better musicianship, in some cases more atmospheric (like some Dimmu Borgir) Every BM band for the most part is modern now. They have more prominent melodies (as in they actualy stick in your head, it is more commercial now) The arrangements aren't always focused on nothing but blastbeats. Now Dimmu Borgir are the kings of Modern Black Metal listen to the songs "Kins of the Carnival Creation", "Progenies of the Great Apocolypse", and "Dreamside Dominions", and "Sympozium". Cradle of Filth was great modern Black metal on Cruelty and the beast now they are more commercial and thrashy but I still like them. Check out the songs "Bathory Aria" and "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids", for their new stuff listen to "Nymphetamine" and "Thank God for the Suffering". other bands like Old Man's Child, I.C.E, Anorexia Nervosa are showing some potential. You can go to their sites to check them out.

Dissection: listen to "Thorns of Crimson Death" and "Where Dead Angels Lie". Read the lyrics too, they are the only band I can really think of that it truly satanic, yeat the lyrics are beutifully written.

NSBM: National Socialist Black Metal. Burzum comes to mind. It's black metal with a nazi twist to it. You can google the topic but I recommend you do it at home, I doubt such websites are work safe.

Black metal is an extreme subgenre of metal characterized by raw/crappy production, dissonant riffs, blastbeats, "evil" atmosphere, and shrieking vocals. Like any genre, there are numerous offshoots of black metal, including symphonic black, which trades the more noisy aspects of the genre for symphonic keyboards, and experimental black, which is fundamentally black metal but includes weird non-metal elements.

National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) is basically black metal with a racist (typically Nazi, but not always) slant.

Death metal is another type of extreme metal featuring growling vocals, technical riffs, and blastbeats. Gory lyrics help, too. :D

Hope this helps.

Most people mean power or prog when they call comething melodic metal. Power and prog are at the melodic end of the metal spectrum, just as death and black are at the extreme end. Thrash kind of falls somewhere in the middle.

Yeah, I know there about 3,340 subgenres I didn't take into consideration. :D

I don't think Burzum is at all Nazi, just maybe a bit of a Varg. (Who is Nazi himself) BUrzum contains almost zero true Nazi lyrics, they are mostly misanthropic and "evil and grim". Burzum to me is just regular black metal.

And Graveland is the same, they have members who believe in the idea of nazism but does not write it in their lyrics.

But however, Black Metal has to be one of the dumbest genres of music ever made. Amen to that.

You know that Opeth started out as a Black Metal band? Opeth started out as a downright Black Metal band until Mikael heard someone play Yes at a party and he was hooked since then. It was on Orchid where you can hear a lot of Black Metal influences mixed in with the "normal" Opeth stuff. It was when Still Life came out, the "black metal influences" were gone.

By the way, Opeth is not just Death/progressive. They are also heavily Doom-metal like. Mikael and Katatonia share a bond like nothing else. I hear this influence heavily on BlackWater Park and Deliverance (the newer albums of course).
