Basically, I'm trying to get into black metal, so I'd like some of the bests from the various styles to see where I should start.

It is a stepping stone, however, if that's what's required to wade into Black Metal. Dimmu Borgir is the perfect band for a slower transition into Black Metal.

Spite Extreme Wing - Non Dvcor, Dvco and Magnificat
Dissection - The Somberlain
Enslaved - Eld, Ruun, Isa
Cirith Gorgor - Onwards to the Spectral Defile
Endstille - Navigator
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon, Transylvanian Hunger
Negura Bunget - Om

Some of my favourites.

Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Immortal - Pure Holocaust

I second most everything that's been said here. If at some point you want to check out some more melodic/symphonic black metal, try the following:

Borknagar- Quintessence
Hollenthon- With Vilest of Worms to Dwell
Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Samael- Eternal, Passage
Primordial- pretty much their whole discography
Dimmu Borgir- Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
Bal-Sagoth- Battle Magic
Obsidian Gate- The Nightspectral Voyage
Limbonic Art- (Zeph can probably give you better recs than me)
Vesperian Sorrow- Psychotic Sculpture

I'm definitely going to eventually. Have to earn the cash first, and I have a long line of records that I need to buy. You can be sure I'll get to it though, thanks for the tip!

Keep of Kalessin - Armada
Summoning - Dol Guldur
Windir - Arntor
Falkenbach - Heralding the Fireblade
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design

A couple of easy to get into Black Metal for beginners

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dust
Satyricon - Rebel Extravaganza
Cradle of Filth - Dusk and her embrace, Principles of Evil Made Flesh
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness

All good albums to start to get into black

enochian crescent - black church
ceremonial castings - barbaric is the beast
lord belial - enter the moonlight gate

all three are really accessible and good.

I remember I used to love Enochain Crescent a few years back when I was first getting into black metal so they're certainly a good recommendation.

I had a big misunderstanding about BM in general at the time and viewed it as this amelodic monstrosity so I was rather impressed with them having such outwardly melodic guitar work.

Marduk - Panzer Division Marduk, Plague Angel
Dark Funeral - Diabolis Interium
Ragnarok - Blackdoor Miracle
Samael - Ceremony of Opposites

Start with these:

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Burzum - Filosofem
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Bathory - Under The Sign Of The Black Mark

These are a few of the foundamental BM albums.
