I'm working on a track right now that has a lot of slow and fast passages. The snare sounds great during the slower passages, but once the blast beats come in it drowns out the rest of the mix. I've tried automating the volume down, but when i do it loses all of its nuts in the mix. I've been experimenting with different compression ratios but I'm having trouble finding a balance.

thanks

Have you played around with automating things like EQ and Reverb? I find that when I am working on tunes that have drastic changes I tend to do this and/or use different drum samples for different sections. Rarely with the EQ and verb stay the same between two sections that are drastically different in the way that you are talking about

compression is a compromise between peak volume and EQ .
The best compressors use parametric EQ as part of their shaping switchable from pre or post.
Try a different compressor or changing what comes first compression or EQ.
Then go back to Automating the volume if you need it
