Blending direct and amped guitar

Can you give me some tips on mixing a direct distortion signal from the effects loop with a miced amp signal? I've got a band that requested "that" sound and I'm not sure how this can work any good.

It depends on what kind of amp you will be using. For example with Recto it sounds good but with 5150 is terrible

wait so they want you to use the signal of the amps preamp without a virtual cab or anything and mix that with the actual mic'd cab?

@Axell I've got a Recto and a 5150 clone. So you think I should go with the Recto? Have you come across any other that might sound good? I don't mind if it's digital. Like a pod or vst.

@abaga129 it's a good technique and you can get some great sounds out of it. listen to the first marilyn manson album for example. there's some DI in there.

Recto or any amp with "small grit" on distortion character I think
