suecof got the mix. My buddy was trying for the mix but didn't end up getting it.

i think BOO is a sick band and i think this song is tight, but i agree it seems like the recording just isnt "there" but i thought they recorded this a bota studios?

If I were to sit and listen to these guys, the only thing by them I'd dare put on is The New Reign. Say what you want about the production, but it at least gave them a somewhat unique sound, something to identify them from a sea of clones all playing a similar brand of breakdown laden technical music. That, and The New Reign's mix is incredibly percussive. It's like a rhythmic attack that shakes your bones, synchronized like a big machine, all the cogs turning in unison.
Since then their production has "improved," the writing has gotten more technical and layered but they now sound like absolutely everyone else that's making this kind of music, which really makes me question whether the production has indeed "improved" or not.
The production should always serve the music, right? To me, this means the production should also give a band a signature sound that separates them from everyone else rather than making them sound exactly like the majority of the rest of the scene.
They also seem to come off as a lot more serious. The New Reign had a really playful edge to it, just dudes having fun. The breakdown in Abstract Art speaks volumes to me, it's utterly absurd and all the better for it.

^ +1
New Reign's guitar tone is crap by this boards standards but I like how it makes the mix "squishy" and fun to listen to. It genuinely sounds like they had a good time recording it.

I listened to the 2nd album probably 3 times and can't listen to it anymore; it's soooooooo bright and loud. yuuuuuuuck.

Edit:
Oh and the new song - It's ok I guess. I only remember the guitar pro section

Lol wut improved?
A Higher Place had zero bass guitar in the mix. Sounds like shit.
But yeah, The New Reign is a sick album though

Yes, and that's exactly the thing about this forum that never continues to baffle me. If a guitar tone is "crap" by conventional standards in terms of frequency distribution and even-ness and big-ness, etc, but gives the band a real unique sound, then it's still a crap tone. To me, that's exactly what makes a GOOD tone.
Unusual sound textures, new sonic worlds to explore, isn't that why we all got into this? To paint with sound?
