bottom hi-hat micing??

hey vatos...

im recording tonight this one guy that has a ridiculous drum set with so many timbles and rototoms and crap, that it's imposible for me to mic the hi-hats from the top, so that the mic won't get on his way.

has anyone done this before??

Yup, works to get rid of the bleed nicely a lot of times.

I always mic the hihat from underneath. Isolates it well from the rest of the kit. A tips is to do exactly the same with the ride cymbal

It won't work that great if the drummer uses a lot of tip and bell on the hi-hat. Even on the ride, the drumstick attack will be reduced.

+123 with the stick and the ride! ... but if you don't need it as much i would go from underneath too!
