[Dark One]

In printing an article of 48,000 words, a printer decides to use two sizes of type. Using the larger type, a printed page contains 1,800 words. Using smaller type, a page contains 2,400 words. The article is allotted 21 full pages in a magazine. How many pages must be in smaller type?

I got every other question right, but this one for some reason is simply eluding me. ARGH.

I multiplied 21 pages by the large font allotment of 1800 words. This gives you a grand total of 37800. Subtract that total from the grand word total of 48,000. That'll leave you with a difference of 10,200. You gain 600 words per page by using the smaller font. 10,200 divided by 600 gives you the answer of 17.

@ Guthrum, LOL - I know what you mean. I'm sure the calculation is simple, it's just one of those things that if you don't pick up on right away, you'll just stare at it for a few minutes and then move on.

I got the answer by process of elimination, but it took entirely too long and is obviously not the right way to do it.

Just saw it. Thanks, that wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I simply kept multiplying numbers of pages and words by both 2400 and 1800 until I found the combination that added up to 48,000.
