Brutal/Slam Death Metal

Advertising? And what kind of porn stuff?

Basically the owner of the site pays for it with google advertising. Google doesn't approve of pornographic stuff on sites with their name on it, and they spot checked UM and found some. If it happens again, they could lose the funding and the site itself could die. That gif wasn't that bad, but he's probably being overly cautious right now.

Ah that kinda sucks haha.

Any fans of Cerebral Bore in the house? Also, does anyone else here enjoy infidelamsterdam?

I check out the Infidel from time to time, mainly because he's associated with Beheaded and Abysmal Torment and some other bands/genres I like.

Cerebral Bore was supposed to play w/ some bands I went to see recently but couldn't get their visas worked out. I like them ok and look forward to some new material. They would have been one of the best bands on that bill, so I was kinda bummed not to see them.

Ahh, did you go to the Dying Fetus+Cattle Decapitation? I forget it`s name. I enjoy Abysmal Torment quite a bit. Dat snare drum.

Fuck yeah. I discovered a lot of bands through infidelamsterdam, including Cerebral Bore. He seems like a good guy. Doesn't take sides or have that elitest mentality that you would think a guy with that much metal knowledge might have.

I've been exploring slam death metal and really like the deep pocket heaviness it achieves, something that's been missing in most of the modern death metal bands I dig (Krisiun, Hate Eternal, Behemoth, etc.), though is more alive with Asphyx, Necros Christos, Hail of Bullets, etc. I posted a couple reviews at the wormgear website and some of this may end up there as well.

I'd like some guidance from the slamming folks on this thread...

Slam that I haven't liked:
Some of the beloved slam bands just seem kind of boring-- Devourment riffs don't stay with me (old or new) and Condemned sound like they're just moving their fingers at a tempo (and don't really slam as much as I was expecting). Cephalotripsy is a bit too riffless for me, though I dig their sound and vocal approach and I do like their new material. Bodysnatch and Pighead have lots and lots of good riffs, but vocals that are way, way, way too playful and bouncy, kind of like Corpsegrinder at his worst/least creative. And Ezphagothamia is an ephemeral experience I can barely remember.
I bought these albums and spent real time with them, but they didn't catch, even though the Ezo has a cool vibe and that Bodysnatch is loaded with good material (that is ruined by the vocalist, who sounds like he is singing nursery rhymes and limericks with a death metal voice).

Slam bands that I liked:
--Begging for Incest. Orgasmic Selfmutilation. Wow these riffs are really great and the arrangements and sound are strong as well. The vocals are a bit too oinky and silly in spots, but overall good enough. I'd pay $150 for this album with the Cephalotripsy singer or an evil growler like Shawn from Insidious Decrepancy or the classic dutch devil, Van Drunen.
--Abomonable Putridity-- both full lengths are cool, though the first one is a bit underdone and the new one is a bit overdone and too technical. (I reviewed this on wormgear)
--Kraanium. Good grooves and progressions. Some nice licks. Wish the bass drums sounded real, but good stuff overall.
--No One Gets Out Alive. Like a Lamb to the Slaughter. Good varied riffs and a fair amount of variety. A bit more menacing than most of this stuff.
--Dysentery. Internal Devastation. They rock the hell out of these riffs. Every song is memorable. (I reviewed this on wormgear as well)
--Disfigurement of Flesh--Cerebral Incubation--Epicardiectomy. These bands are solid, but are not as memorable or varied as stuff like Begging & Dysentery. In truth, the Epicardiectomy is really just a slightly catchier take on Cephalotripsy's debut LP, but that slight bit is enough to make it a win for me.

I visited slam-minded a lot, and dig the site (though I disagree with them about 3 out of 4 times), and am looking for slam-centered death metal albums that have memorable riffs and strong vocals--- nothing bouncy or playful (eg. don't mimic the riffs or gurgle on every downbeat or grunt triple meter across 4/4 and call it a vocal phrase).

Thanks for the educational posts and any recommendation in advance...

Sounds to me like you're a bigger fan of real mid-tempo slam as opposed to the technical stuff. One you definitely need to check out is Pathology. They have their faster moments but a lot of their shit is more like Abominable Putridity and those guys.

Side not about Ezophagothomia: whoever was in charge of their drum samples needs to get thrown into a river. That album is nearly unlistenable thanks to the shitty drums. The kick literally sounds like an old NES game "kiss" sound effect. It's all click and NO thump.

I think the begging for incest and Bodysnatch lp's are easily the standouts from the stuff you have listed - i pretty much agree with your assessment on the other bands - not a lot of it stands up to repeated listening.

A couple of other recent lp's in the same vein which I think are standouts:

ABNORMITY - Irreversible Disintegration

(lots of people say these guys are a derivative take on A.P. but i like this lp more than both A.P. albums)

UROGENITAL MACROPHAGE - Perversion and Sickness Destroy the Human Race

(groovy as fuck, killer bass - a monster of a record - kind of flew under the radar)

CUMBEAST - Recycled Nastiness

(not really a slam record i suppose but seriously great heavy riffs and some thugged out rapping - good fun)

The gurchick tree ep was also pretty good, Degrade's "lost torso found" is great - faster than most stuff but great vocals.

I've listened to about 6 songs from various Pathology albums and like some parts of some of them. Is there an album that has a focus more on memorable hooks and slower material? (I do like what I've heard of Being Killed, which is a different kind of music, but I believe some of the same guys.)

Thanks for the links! I will explore all of these.
I have Gurchick, which hasn't quite clicked with me yet, but it is decent. In terms of short and idiosyncratic, I prefer the Goemagot demo. And also that Acranius disk people hate has some nice arrangements and catchy riffs, even if it does have more hardcore than anything else in my rather large music collection other than my Kataklysm albums.

Yes, Begging for Incest & Bodysnatch have the best riffs, but the earlier is a bit hampered by loud, playful pig vocals and the latter (Bodysnatch) is ruined for me by the amount of playful/bouncy vocal patterns. But it's loaded with great licks.

I just got and enjoyed the (slightly slamming) Welding Torture Mcd, which is like Deeds of Flesh's Gradually Melted, but with some slam parts. And Afflictive Emasculation had a lot of good hooks, but considering the longer more rocking nature of the AE tunes, this project would be greatly benefited by a live human drummer.

I couldn't get past the playful vocals on Cumbeast, but THANK YOU very much for pointing out Abnormity, whom you describe quite well, and Urogenital Macrophage, which sounds really top notch-- it's nice to hear something dynamic AND filthy (though the bass drums are too loud and kinda cluttered).

I will order both of these albums when I get back from my trip--- this is exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

Look up the track "Hostility Towards Conformity". I can't find a YT link that isn't a shitty live recording, but that's the track that made me love the band. It has a NASTY riff that kind of "hovers" over the song in a way that brutal/slam almost never does. Speeds up in the middle, brings back the power later.
