The Bulldogs win in a thriller. Certainly not the best grand final ever, or even the best game of the year, but keeping the most devastating attacking side of the year scoreless for a full 40 minutes was edge-of-the-seat stuff! It was nice to see Mason win the best-and-fairest, but to be honest, none of the Dogs really stood out yesterday, except when El Masri started playing pivot (somewhat ambitiously) about halfway through the second half while Sherwin was off bludging somewhere. Ryan almost blew the match by not taking that penalty shot early in the game and then coming up with a few errors, but saved the match with a tackle on Walker and then that last one on Crocker! It was a pretty scrappy game, but there was quite a few moments of brilliance. Fittler's kick that put Walker over was genius beyond genius and when he put that little chip in right at the end I thought he was going to pull off a last ditch Roosters win. But we prevailed. :) Tough as fuck game though. And how good was it to see Ryan hand over the winning captain's speech to Price and Thurston give him his player's medal?

I despise the Bulldogs, but I felt so sorry for Steve Price, 10 years at the club, they finally get to the grand final and he cant play :( He even smiled when they put the cameras on him at the start of the match.

I was at the game. Pretty damn good. Some notes:

* Got to Telstra Stadium at around 1:30. Not many there.

* Watched the Jersey Flegg game. Pretty dang good, the Sharks OWNED the Roosters until the last 20 minutes or so. Everyone was cheering on the Sharks except the Roosters fans (obviously) and I didn't think there were many Roosters supporters at all at that time until Easts scored and a thunderous roar went around the stadium. I guess there were more than I thought.

* Watched the Premier League game. I was secretly going for the Roosters in this game because Ivan Cleary was the coach and I wanted him to go to the Warriors as assistant coach with a title under his belt for when he eventually takes Tony Kemp's job. Good game. I suspect the Dragons thought the game was a trial for the Warriors, what with the amount of dropped ball.

* With about about five minutes to go to kick off, my brother thought it would be a good time to get yet another feed. Fool.

* Just before kick off, an old woman walking past me stopped and said, "You look like Courtney from Australian Idol". The people behind me laughed hysterically.

* Game was very sloppy in the first half. NOT a quality game, handling-wise, but the atmosphere made up for it. I was going for the Doggies (no way in hell I could go for the Roosters) and so the result was good.

* After the game my brother and I went to another gate to meet one of his pals. I somehow found myself standing right in the middle of the Bulldogs Army outside the ground. Quite disconcerting, but we had a huge Maori guy that looked like Paul Rauhihi's bigger, tougher brother so I felt somewhat safe.

* Caught the train home with a bunch of Bulldogs supporters and saw no trouble. In fact, it was a very pleasant evening all round. The Doggies fans are a rowdy bunch, but didn't do anything bad that I saw. I just wish I was as passionate about my team - hell, about ANYTHING - as they obviously are about their team.

As bad as I feel for Steve Price, he DID play in three grand finals for the club. Or was it two? No, three.

At least he'll be fresh for the Warriors next year.

He won in 1995, Spawn.

No double movement, Koich. :) I'm assuming you're talking about El Masri. He was still moving and stuff, he wasn't tacked, he was just caught on top of the Roosters players.

If Hagerty had placed a hand on him, he would have been tackled. As it was, he was on top of the defending players, and his movement had not been impeded. Hegarty was standing right there. All he had to do was touch him, and El Masri would have been tackled. Mander was right on the spot. I doubt he would have made a massive fuck up as that.

Yep,wasn't the best quality game, but I know from experience that the immense atmosphere of a Grand Final goes some way to compensating for an average game.I mean,I went to the Roosters/Warriors one in 2002,and while the game itself was decidedly average, the crowd was electric.Plus we had the head of the Warriors cheer squad near us so it was pretty loud!!!!!!

I've heard some people complaining about Willie Mason winning the Clive Churchill medal, and while I'm far form a fan of his,he had a HUGE game and deserved the award.

The last time I checked the rule book, Having a defending player underneath you, stopping you from grounding the ball when you are over the tryline was called being "held up".

He wasn't carried over by momentum, he jumped out of the tackle, this is called a "double movement"

But he wasn't held up. The referee hadn't called a tackle. Until the ref calls a tackle, a player can get up and continue. The ball hadn't touched the ground, and he hadn't been deemed tackled. Therefore, it wasn't a double movement. He didn't jump out of a tackle, because the tackle had not been effected. Therefore, try time. :)

It was a weird try that el masri one. I've seen similar called double movement...
I though Tonga made quite a few mistakes, things which he just shouldn't have done - I think he let the duel with Hodges get the better of him on a few occassions...
The roosterse never really got into the groove. Their attack was poor throughout the night, for most of ti they didn't even look like challenging the dogs line. Good defensive effort.

What's that for the roosters now? they've lost a fair few grand finals in the last 10 years...

go the Doggies \m/

my sister's boyfriend is a doggies supporter, and we're in an AFL town, so this was HIS night. And he had two cartons of Jack riding on the game, so I was going for the Doggies as well.

Rock Rock On!

It's only a double movement if the ball contacts the ground after the tackle has been effected and the player picks it up and puts it across the line. That didn't happen in this case, because El Masri had not been called tackled. Besides which, he was already across the line, so it wouldn't have been a double movement anyway. It would have been a 10metre restart.

I disagree with your assessment about the Roosters. They challenged the Dogs' line a lot, but after going in with a lead at the break they came back out like they'd already won the game.

The Roosters have played four Grand Finals in five years, and won one of them. :D

Balmain I think. Losing 4 from 5 is pretty bad though, at least they won one though I guess.
