Buried God – Dark Revelation
Merciless Records – M.R.CD015 – 24th March 2003
By Russell Garwood

German thrashers Buried God recently released their debut album through Merciless Records. "Dark Revelation", despite being ‘not an attempt to cash in on any retro-trends’ is undeniably old school, ringing of bands like Sodom, Destruction and Kreator. Hence the band don’t score well on originality, but their frenzied assault on your senses is both relentless and unforgiving, and therefore enough to placate the more demanding fans of ferocity. Precise guitars and harsh vocals come courtesy of Halli - the former careering along at breakneck pace and the latter made all the more grating by death touches. Backing vox and bass are performed by Ernstl, whose powerful lines support manic guitar breaks, and complete a tight rhythm section. Drummer Engel has no trouble maintaining a rapid pace, his straightforward but forceful beats matching the music to perfection.

Included on "Dark Revelation" is a cover of Griffin’s "Hunger" from their 1986 "Protectors Of The Lair" album, which fits in very well amongst the nine original songs. Buried God are all competent musicians, my only complaint with this release would be that the music lacks diversity. The tracks tend to become an extended barrage of riffs and growls – something that will be no problem if you are an old school fan, but could be if you’re looking for eclecticism and variation. If you do enjoy classic speed metal this onslaught will fit perfectly in your CD collection, and - if you are a fan of the more unforgiving kinds of metal - you may well still want to give this debut a listen.
