I recently discovered the black metal band Burzum. I really like them, but I have a question about how Varg sings.
I know how to do traditional black growls, like the ones used by bands like Bathory and Gorgoroth. Varg's voice sounds quite different. It's quiet and whispered sounding, but extremely harsh sounding. I know that he used to use distortion on his voice on albums like Filosofem, but on albums like Fallen, his voice has no distortion on it, but it is still the same kind of rasp.
For most other black metal bands, with the exception of Immortal, you open your mouth wide sideways, and push with your diaphragm, like in a death growl, only higher, but Burzum and Immortal sound more Lemmy like. If anyone knows how to sing like Varg Vikernes, please explain.
