Just wondering for any of you drummers, when you first bought a kit yourself, how did you go about it? Did you sit down and say "I want this kit, this finish on my drums, my snare drum to sound like this... yadayadayada" and try and find the closest you could to what you want or did you just go and get the best one you could find in the shop?
Also if you have any recommendations then my budget is about AU$1500 excluding cymbals, stool and sticks. I'm looking for something that would suit thrash, and preferably a 6-piece. I have in my head that I want a low-sounding snare with very minimal resonance (which I achieve at the moment by covering a third of my current snare with a towel).
Don't know what exactly I have at the moment because it's second-hand and pretty beaten up. Got it for Christmas from the parents.
