Chambercraft - Last Cast
Self Release - 2007
By Paddy Walsh
As far as one-man black metal projects go, Northern Ireland's Chambercraft are up there with the likes of Xasthur and even Leviathan in terms of claustrophobic nihilism and suffocating atmosphere. Released as a 10" picture disc, this 2-song EP is sure to appeal to those of you prone to sitting in murky caverns in winter. With a suitably low-fi sound that weaves a somewhat distant atmosphere, the vocals flit between tortured howls and shrieks that would do Malefic proud, and bizarre chanting that at times recalls a more necro Bergtatt-era Ulver. Musically Chambercraft visit more than just the expected black metal vistas, as doom and drone are also touched upon in places, with the opening moments of 'Last Cast' in particular being reminiscent of SunnO))) circa Black One. This is a strong EP, showing that bedroom black metal projects still have something to offer, and that they aren't all just piss poor Darkthrone clones.
