What do you think? I love his work, mostly with Blind Guardian of course. He can have a tendency to bury guitars, but damn everything he does sounds so epic :worship:

Which BG albums did he too?
It's been ages since I've heard that band, but I remember their later stuff sounding pretty incredible sonically.

He was involved with nightfall, along with Flemming Rasmussen (the guy that did the early Metallica stuff) but he did all the production for a night at the opera and a twist in the myth, as well as the live albums, which I have always thought sound amazing. Just listening to the track "and then there was silence" off of ANATO reminds me why power metal will always be ace in my book, even if I do mainly listen to death these days.

A Night At the Opera and Twist In the Myth both sound pretty sick. I'm not really a power metal fan, but I always loved those two albums.

His productions on the last several Helloween cds have been amazing sounding as well. He was always one of my favorites. His guitars only get buried sounding when he has 100 vocal tracks and 100 orchestral tracks to try and squeeze into the mix as well ;)

I think that's why I respect him so much, I wouldn't know where to even begin tracking/mixing something with that many tracks. I read an interview with Hansi where he said that some of the songs on ANATO exceeded 250 tracks lol.

He's doing the new Rage as well:

The latest Saxon album was recorded at Blind Guardian's own Twilight Hall Studios, I also believe the new Rage album will be recorded there as well. I have looked everywhere for more info about that place, but there really isn't much to be found, so German Sneapsters, go to Krefeld, find the studio and takes lots of pictures for me :p

He can get some pretty amazing sounds IMO. He did the latest Saxon albuns as well.

Gotta say I prefer the sound on Saxon albums to Rage's... He has worked with Rage since 2001's "Unity" CD and his recordings always felt a bit smashed, it all felt too compressed to me... And artificial sounding triggered drums don't do it for me either, just listen to Rage's recordings... And with Terrana behind the kit, I don't see the reason for such a drastical use of triggers. Even the man himself said that was one of the reasons for quitting Rage, as he much prefers live drum sound...

I can't remember now if he masters his productions himself or not, but I suppose he gives his blessing for the final masters. Whoever mastered those surely pushes the loudness to the limits, not a big fan of that I must say...

Imaginations from the other side are one of my alltime favorites. Especially the choirs are the hugest i can remember. Sounds like a sick gospel choir in a good way:) Everything else sounds great too...

Terrana is indeed, amazing ! I love the recent Rage albums and I agree on the damn triggered drums. Charlie also recorded the recent Helloween, Axel Rudi Pell and some Hammerfall too. I think he has a signature sound, you can easily say it is one of his records by the sound of the drums. Great sound, but every band is starting to sound the same. The Saxon album that makes me kick everything and start banging is Unleash The Beast... same with Imaginations From The Other Side. Plays constantly on my CD player (YES, i'm old :)).
BTW: Did anyone who listened to 2007 Saxon's record The Inner Sanctum found out that the snare drum on Need For Speed, more precisely from 2:49 on, is mistriggered ? If that was intentional, it sounds horrible IMO.

Yeah, good point... The song is great and those snares ruin it at the end for me.
Sounds like the ghost notes were triggered with full hit samples that were only lowered in volume = :puke:

It would be fun to see a metal CD with "No triggers, sample replacing or quantizing" sticker on it... Something like when bands were bragging with "no synths used" 25 years ago :)

Don't forget Gamma Ray's "Land Of The Free" and "Somewhere Out In Space"

BG, Gamma Ray and Rage are three of my favourite top 10 bands...
so I consider Charlie a genius.

Gamma Ray should have gotten with him again for Land of the Free II. Even though I really like that cd, there is something missing. Besides, it would have really helped to recapture what they did on the 1st album ... by far my favorite one from GR and one of the best metal albums of all time I think

+ 1

Heading For Tomorrow is one of the history of music's masterpiece.

Gamma Ray's late albums are very good but productions are shit.
Since Powerplant the band has been producing their own albums, big mistake, cause they sound flat and lifeless.
They should recruit Tommy Newton or Bauerfind again.
