cheap alternative to shure 57s

hey egan, what type of overhead placement are you using? I have been using the above placement for about 3 years and I have never had any problems with phase etc, I started to use it as I only had four mics, but now I mic everything, but I defiantly seem to get too much snare and room.

A shop here in Mauritius sells brand new SM57 for a little less than 12 $ ! They probably forgot a "0" in the price. Needless to say, everyone I shared this info with have bought some. Its a genuine SM57, I compared it with my old one, same exact sound, look, accessories…

Yeah right... I hope your wrong so I can order 3 of them, but I highly doubt they are genuine

as I said, they weight, look and sound the same, so even if they're not genuine, I don't care. Again, I'm s(h)ure it's a mistake by the departmental store that sells them. BTW, a music store here sells SM57 for like 110-120 $, and a "good imitation" for 80 $, but I didn't tested those

Well the thing is that you can't really have to many 57s, so even if they might be "expensive" for your purposes, they can be used for so much else that I would feel that they would be worth the extra cash. Other than that, the only thing I can really recommend would be a pg 57, but I can't say much about it in the recording field.

they would be worth the extra cash.

There is the issue here. SM57 vs. Anything cheaper. The 57 is not extra cash lol.

Honestly, if you can't afford to spend a few hundred dollars on 57s for recording purposes, you shouldn't be diving into the rabbit hole that is recording. You are either way too low on cash to be buying gear instead of food, or you do not have the interest to get into this hobby/profession because shortly after getting started, a $100 microphone will be the least of your concerns.

Just my opinion.

to sysera, diving into the rabbit hole!

Why does everyone here assume cause you have only a few posts that you are new. I have a tone of gear, Mackie Onyx (+ firewire card), Sonar Producer 7 + quality plug - ins, Behringer V amp + Mini amp 800 (headphone amp), ESI Monitors, Rode NT5'(2), Rode NT2A's (1), Akg C418's (4), Shure 57's (2), Audio Tech Pro Kick Microphone + other various equipment. As you can see I have two to begin with, just wanted to know some cheap alternatives as I have just purchased other gear and didn't want to spend a huge amount. Some people on this forum assume too much, for fuck sack it is a question.

By the way they are $130 AUS here, so everyone has $520 to go and spend on four of them!!!

couldn't afford condensers for every cymbal, and just thought they would do the job. I should have researched it more, but seen a few guys use them.

It could work, but I would expect them to have a hell of a midrange sound to them. More classic rock than metal, or modern rock.

Edit: You could always pick up some cheap dynamics, of any kind, Behringer, and use them to mic toms, and replace the mic'd toms with samples of your toms made using the 57s, and use your current 57s for the cymbals. Just a thought.

I normally use a spaced pair and try to get mostly cymbals with minimal drums and hats. I'm actually a big proponent of lots of cymbal mics but it is important to get a strong image from the main pair. There was actually a great thread on here a while back where we discussed placement and multimicing of cymbals.
If I were in your shoes I would probably buy another single nt5 (or a pair if you can swing it) and try a spaced pair a little tighter on the cymbals and then throw the other on the hats (and ride if you get two).
Best luck.

thanks everyone who helped out. Buying another 57 for under the the snare and going to still just use two nt5's but try other placements apart from recorderman, just read the sticky on metal drums.
