Currently using a modded Windsor, I can't stand the tone, and I don't want to continue to mod, because it's a pain. I'm thinking of selling it for whatever I can get, and upgrading to a different amp. I'm not looking for anything br00tal, just something with a well balanced tone that isn't fizzy at higher gains. My max would be 500$.

I had a Dual Terror. It was okay, but not enough clean headroom really. The distorted tone was usable, but I prefer bigger amps personally. I sold it recently, and I'm now considering a new amp.
I was thinking a 5150, but I don't really play metal anymore, I play hardcore type music, and I don't know how versatile the 5150/6505's are. I'm not sure about the valveking, I've heard a lot of bad reviews about it. Thanks for the info Drew.

And indeed a 5150 will still fit the bill perfectly for that style of music.
While it's often said the 5150 is a one trick pony, in reality it doesn't matter what style of rock music it is, be it pop rock/punk, post hardcore, technical progressive death metal, post metal or black metal, a 5150 WILL fucking slay.

Depending on how tight your budget is, you can find a lot of the mid-90s Peavey Ultra Plus heads on ebay for ridiculously low prices, they're awesome amps (3 channels, predecessors to the XXX)
