Cheope – Downloadideas

How to describe Cheope. Hmmm. Well they have a chipper 'raise you fists in the night, as you fight the power with all your might' attitude so that would be power metal's influence. Then they have these very melodic clean guitar interludes so that would be, what, Dire Straits?! Then there are these electronica interludes which sound a bit like Linkin Park. Yeah, I think that sounds about right. Oh, and maybe throw in some modern metal influences from bands such as Korn and Disturbed. What you get is a very commercial sound that is a bit too overproduced. While the record is pretty catchy and is well written, it doesn't really have any stand out hits, nor does it work from a whole album point of view. The biggest problem is I haven't got a fucking clue what the album is about and the name of the album, Downloadideas, does little to alleviate this. The lyrics also suffer, having come from a band who are recording in their second language and so you end up with lines like: "I will fly like a pink and blue kite/the world is black and white?!" Mkay. Being stuck in the proverbial woods on the nature of this album, I would have to conclude that while fairly well executed Downloadideas won't do much to endear Cheope to any new fans out there.
