Chinese Democracy?

I tried to give it a benefit of a doubt, and tried to listen to it. But I just can't. Maybe if it wasn't GnR. And maybe if it wasn't the whining voice Axl. The only GnR I've ever liked was a few songs from their Appetite for Destruction. And I remember back in the day, seeing Slash when "guitarist of the year" and "guitar solo of the year" awards and thinking...."whh...huh??? Are we listening to the same thing?" That's the moment I lost faith in the musical judgement of the general public.

I'm hardly a GnR fanboy, but I must admit I just listened to it all on Myspace and whilst it starts off on a 6/10, it finishes on a 10 for me. The second half of the album blew me away. The production is boring, I'll admit, but the interplay between Axl and Ron is just stunning. Some of the best guitar solo's I have heard in a very long time.

I think the GnR moniker is very deceptive, this album is pretty downbeat compared to AfD. 'Epic' rather than catchy. Whereas Slash always had a thing for playful blues licks, Ron has a darker melancholy edge to his sound. I never for a million years expected to be looking forward to this! I'll be in queue to buy it on Sunday, or whenever it is released in the UK.

IMHO some of the solos he recorded on Appetite and the Illusion records are among the greatest solos to be ever put on a rock'n'roll record.

And among those, the solo to "Sweet Child O' Mine" might possibly be my most favorite solo ever. But that's just me.

I'm not saying his playing was bad...but back then, comparing his solos to those of George Lynch, John Sykes, Tony MacAlpine, or even Yngwie (before he got on my nerves)...there was just no comparison...not even in the same league. Now, don't get me wrong, I liked Slash's guitar work, and loved the tone on AfD (but nothing after that), I just always thought there was much more impressive guitar work out there at the time. It's all good...and we all have our own tastes.

i think you guys are too harsh maybe too metal:p i think anybody over 30 may like this i think im getting too old anyway im glad i lived the 80's:kickass:

I dont listen to any music made after 1995(Exception for Panteram, Damageplan and Lamb Of God that has some kickass-attitude still.), but most music i listen to was made during the 80's, but I still think this record sucks, and the reason is because its one other of those 80's rockstars trying to make modern music(Why cant they just realize that they suck so hard at it?).

putting this new record aside i don't see how anyone doesn't like the real GNR. or the 80s, lol.

Well, someday people will realise that screaming untill your throat starts bleeding, and playing so downtuned that it sounds like a wet fart actually isnt that fun, no matter how many switches between 11/8 and 14/256 you do. :muahaha:

I hope this record was a joke.
I couldnt even stand listening too it. :erk:

Someone clearly didnt hear Winger, Racer X, Dokken, Whitecross or Shotgun Messiah(To name a few.). ;)

The fact that there are exceptions doesn't invalidate the fact that Poison and Motley Crue were not shot in the face for their transgressions against humanity.

As far as 'the new metaltrend to bash the 80s'... I was bashing the 80s before it was cool, fuckers. I also haven't noticed that it's a 'trend' of any kind, as 99% of the people who have heard me bash the 80s have disagreed on similar grounds and the remaining 1% just looked at me funny.

But we already learned our lesson about having pink guitars, hair that resembles large cats fresh out of the dryer, groupies with more VD than their hometown's free clinic treats in a year, singers that think they're gods because they squeal like little girls, and neverending pentatonic wankery through too much distortion - so there's no telling what will come next.

Seriously, how many bands have you ever heard thats done well with the mainstream crowds that where really good?
Mötley Crüe's first albums are probably the best party albums ever made, but its nothing I would turn on and just listen to.

I wasn't really that serious, and I really think its funny with that "I DID IT BEFORE YOU DID!"-attitude, kinda reminds me of those metalheads that start listening to a band, and when more people start listening to them, that band suddenly sucks!
But seriously, if you gave the 80's a chance you would see that there where other bands then Guns N' Roses, Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P., Mötley Crüe, Stryper & Poison. ;)
And lets not forget the Thrash-scene!

Yeah, its much better too look like apes, sound like apes, play like apes, and complain about the freakin' lions always gettin' more then you!
(It seems like no one here understand my sence of humor: the above is IRONY, even though i still love the 80's.)

But on a serious note: It was during the 80's people started to go away from the pentatonic-scale and incorporate more features from the classical music, so if you are going to bash at a typical 80's scale, bash about harmonic minor! ;)

Does anyone else realize the ridiculous futility of talking in such broad terms about music from eras? I personally love a lot of 80s stuff, but I'm still a big fan of modern metal at heart (and Notuern, surely you realize that there's far more than super-technical death metal with all those time changes out there, cuz I don't even like that)

Sorry dude. I'm 39. I don't like it. I never liked GnR except for two or three songs off their first album. I've never liked Axl's voice and the style of music just wasn't my thing. Dokken (the Lynchmeister), Whitesnake, Leatherwolf, Winger, Ratt, Hurricane, Racer X was where it was at for me (not to mention Priest, Maiden, & Helloween).

Sounds like someone missed the sarcasm train... and I'll give you a hint: it wasn't me.

Sounds like someone missed the sarcasm train themselves! ;)

I was quite sarcastic when I wrote that actually(And more or less making fun of the "80's music suck".). ;P
But its true that I dont like much modern music, but there are a few exceptions like Black Label Society, Iron Gag, Down, Hellfueled, Lamb Of God and Dezperadoz, but I think all of those bands lack some musical quality(Compared to Winger, Racer X, Pantera, Dokken, Whitecross and Whitesnake.).
