I'm thinking about buying a dedicated mic preamp as the one's in my M-Audio projectmix are ok but not the best. It's really for vocals and my guitar DI's so I can get the best quality at the start. Being a bedroom recorder I'm not very good with gear or electronics or what so how do you tell if a preamp is any good or not?
Is there some sort of specifications that you can look at that give an indication of quality or is it just 'try then buy'?
