Christian fundermentalisum

Sounds fair to me, we use up all the stuff and then the party's over. Personally, screw God and let's do a beer run.

Irony is the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression and the context in which it occurs. In this case, the Christian teens are expressing their love for the New Testament. We think that's ironic, because to us the "new Testament" is the latest album from a thrash metal band called Testament, which Christians probably wouldn't like.

Explain how it was apt.

the situation of Bucko listening to the new Testament album and seeing kids wearing shirts proclaiming that they "love the new testament" isn't in any way ironic.

it's coincidental and apt in the fact of creating humour for Bucko and us.

it would only be ironic if they were protesting metal whilst wearing those shirts and then only thinly.

but back to the topic.

saw a fundie on TV last night that literally had me screaming at the set.
He was going on about the evils of Islam and Catholics (since he was on a pay TV news channel about the Papal visit to Sydney) and how "all must convert to the true faith of Christ or burn in hell" and all that shite.
they actually ended up cutting his mic off and they apologises for having him as part of the discussion but what he said got me so made.
sure it would be on youtube by now -was either Fox or CNN.

you should also try and find a video called "Fundamentalist verses Mormons" which was about Fundies going to Salt Lake City during a big Mormon convention and try to convert them -because they think that Mormonism is a false religion and they don't want to see them burn in hell.

the arguments from both sides are really funny.

tried looking for it on youtube to post but the one they had was removed.
anyone look on veoh or those other youtube-esque sites?

I think it's interesting to note that there are actually two types of irony: conversational and situational. This is definitely not conversational irony; it might be nudging into situational irony; it sure is coincidental. I'm pretty sure it's not apt, unless there's a definition of apt that I'm not aware of. Who would have thought it figures?

I actually might be wrong in my use of the word apt but can't remember the other term of the situation.

and it just annoys me when people get the term irony wrong and usually use it in the fucked American fashion.

for example of non-ironic irony of the Americans (and sometimes Canadians), listen to the song Ironic.

I'm sorry. I guess I must have been out of the room during the part of my masters degree where they explained what irony was.

same as I must've missed it doing my English major, English lit. courses and two teaching courses (College level and English as a 2nd language).

not trying to get the measuring tape out here, Gore, but we obviously have different views of an ironic situation and use of the word in the modern context.

I'll see your petty pieces of paper and raise you both a link to dictionary.com

already done that.

and if you guys want true fundies to hate, aim all your despising at the WestBoro Baptist Church and their leader, Fred Phelps.

these are the cunts who protest gay and army funerals and say God Hates America because Homosexuals, Catholics and Mexicans are allowed into the country to do what they want.
they are literally the lowest in all of humanity, dispicable creatures who's views have no place within even a semi-civilised society.

Both the Chasers and Michael Moore have satirised them.

So do I, sadly.

BTW, after a big long think about it, I have to concede that Shadow is right. Bucko was talking about a co-incidence, not an irony. An irony would have been:

Xtian: I love the New Testament
Bucko: I love the new Testament too
Xtian: Which verses are your favourites
Bucko: [sings some lines from a song]

It would have also been ironic if Bucko thought the Christian lad was talking about the New Testament but was in fact talking about the new Testament album.

However, I don't agree with your contention that the "American" definition of irony is different from anyone else's, as the Macquarie dictionary has the same definition as dictionary.com. The use of irony or ironic in place of co-incidence or co-incidental isn't restricted to Americans as this discussion has shown. eg. "I was making jokes about this guy, ironically, he was standing right behind me" isn't irony. However, a local Christian guy being opposed to a community festival because of its apparent basis in the occult would be ironic if the same festival was supported by a Christian church.
