Colin Davis guitar recording tutorial vid...

On the bottom of this guy's web page there are some audio samples of his work. One of them was a $6,000 project. Not trying to be a dick, but I'd cut my own dick off if I spent $6,000 on that production. As far as I'm concerned, someone can get good tone with ANY equipment with a little innovation and know how. Bad strings, good strings, passive active, solid state, tube, etc.

lol!!! But thats coz u rock splatt!

i mean he speaks a lot with conviction on things that sometimes are subjective.

i only watched the first few minutes and bookmarked it to watch later but so far he is very opinionated. "the x2n doesn't sound good, the evo does" "thicker strings sound heavier"

those things CAN be true but there are people who would disagree. i feel like a tutorial should either stick to facts or have a preamble about "these are my opinions and they work for me"

there can be someone that thinks the evo sucks for recording you know. i've heard .10 gauge strings in dropped C that sound heavy and full. so i feel like stating opinions like facts isn't the best thing to do in a tutorial video.

cool video. I don't agree with alot of what he said, but I did think it would be good for people learning how to do metal tones.....but I also think he needs a disclaimer as mentioned above... "these are opinions....not rules".

ok just checked out his "blog" for home recording, and just had to share one little quote with you guys.....:puke:

"The more money you spend on monitors, the less time it will take you to develop a good ear and learn to make good mixes."

I think a couple of you fuckers are out of line with your comments. Colin used to frequent this board with valuable advice but stopped because of nickel-dicks like you who have no idea what the fuck they are talking about yet make know-it-all posts like you are recording authorities. Colin's been doing this shit since some of you were in diapers, and he sure as hell doesn't need me to defend him, even if he does seem to be off his rocker sometimes. He's a mainstay of the Bay Area metal scene, yes that same one that brought you Metallica, Forbidden, Exodus, Testament, etc. so show some respect and shut the fuck up.

I was thinking the same thing, but I'm glad I didn't have to be the first one to post it.
I'm a fan of the guy's work and I certainly don't see anything wrong with the production samples; in fact I think the 6,000 dollar example sounds awesome even though I don't necessarily dig the band.

I've also sent a mastering job to him before and he did an absolutely fantastic job.

There may be some quirks to the video and his style of presenting the information, but the guy obviously knows what he's doing and this type of thing should be really useful to the right crowd.

i think his mixes are good, what i don't like is his tendency to use that over distorted bass...sounds all farty & i often mistook it for the guitars bass thump going flabby
