composing videa game music/getting into the industry

I would imagine getting started with an indie developer and creating a portfolio for yourself would be a good start.

The guys who made Mount & Blade still seem like they're desperately in need of a good composer.

All of the above stated are great suggestions. Write some music, put it to a game that is already out as a demo reel. Any style goes nowdays, either it be electronic, techno, instrumental, metal, orchestral. Make a website, blog, etc..and get in contact with companies or developers via their websites. Though, I would suggest at least completing a couple of pieces just to have a handful of things to show.

you gotta learn to do some fucked up trance techno music, most of the games that I ever heard with metal music suck so badly, it doesn't fit vidogames lol ;).
I mean the adrenaline builds up better with that techno trance stuff.

yep.. pretty much on the money. which is why my few submissions to game developers have all been electronic music based...

HERE"S a sample of one idea i sent in some years ago for Perfect Dark Zero.... i didn't get a job and it wasn't used, but it was intended as theme/menu/pause music. it's a loop, you'll soon notice, as all this sort of thing usually should be easily loopable. Perfect Dark is a kind of futuristic spy thing, so the idea was tailored to that.

i played the simple drum part with a finger-pad controller, and the rest with my Kurzweil K2VXs as controller, using a mix of it's onboard patches and various soft-synth/samplers. i avoided any "lo-fi" processing/sounds, and distortion, or other types of audio mangling... which i normally love in my EM... because i wanted this one to be very clean, dark but clean and futuristic/hi-tech sounding, which i felt would suit the game very well.

I totally agree, I used to play the first PD and this track would have fit in perfectly. Well done on putting it together, came out solid.

@Ermz: Several of my friends play M&B and actually have complained about that, coincidentally.

Yeah, their implementation of that stock music collection is... amateurish. The game has been developed for so long, yet they never got someone to work on a proper score. I normally play Jeremy Soule's 'Morrowind' and 'Oblivion' soundtracks in the back. They work great.

Totally does have that Perfect Dark feel to it though.

yeah, cool... glad you guys can hear that. i have a lot more "game music"... but i'd be interested to hear some of anyone else's who's done some on here.

post it if ya got it.

That's a pretty chill track James. I dig the vibe and the electronic elements. I need to flex a bit more in the electronic area as I'm too concerned a lot of the time with orchestral stuff. Once I get a couple of ideas/rough pieces together maybe I can let you hear them since you listen to movies score/game music about as much as I do. Well, probably Ermz, too

thanks for the all the response guys, i havent had a chance to really read back on this as my car just blew up but ill check it out later!
