As a whole I think it is. At least in the U.S.

Now I hate country just as much as the next metal head, but can I just say this:

The last country band who I had to work with in the studio absolutely and completely blew away every metal band I've ever worked with in terms of musicianship, creativity, behavior and knowledge. These motherfuckers were writing three part harmonies on the spot, and nailing them. The last time I had a metal singer try and write a harmony was a fucking joke. Had to grab a guitar and teach him what a harmony was.
