I built my first recording rig and am looking to beef up a couple of weak links and ask a couple of questions at the same time...
Currently using;
2011 MacBook Pro (Garage Band)
M-Audio Fast Track
SM57
regular headphones
I'm tracking vox, guitar and bass with pre-programmed drum tracks (EZ Drummer).
I want to upgrade the interface first as I'm limited to a single mic input at the moment and would like to be able to run two mics at a time. I'm thinking about getting the Apogee Duet 2. Any thoughts?
Also, is there any point in getting a dedicated mic preamp? What would the benefit be over the Apogee's built in preamp?
Recommendations on a second mic to pair with the SM57 when tracking guitars?
And lastly, what are some suggestions for headphones? I'd like a set of cans since I record in the same room as the live amp and need to block out enough of the sound to hear the rest of the tracks.
In terms of budget I'm looking for "bang-for-buck" advice but not looking for "cheap" solutions. If something costs more but makes sense I'll just take longer to save up for it.
