title says it all....I'm looking to go legit ....Its been out for like 2 weeks now and wondering how it's working ???

I hear Reverence is giving alot of ppl some crazy CPU spikes and it's kinda unuseable as of right now.

alright lets hear it.....

I have it.... Installed it on my laptop since my new computer isn´t done yet. So far it´s working great! Haven´t messed around too much with the new features yet but I´ve opened some old projects and haven´t had any problems. I did try Reverence and it sounds great!
Sorry for the lack of technicalities, I´ll write some more once I´ve had the time to fiddle with it!

No but since I bought Cubase 4 after December 1st I get it for free!! wooo I'll be sending in the rebate coupon as soon as I read some positive stuff about it.

Just got my grace upgrade yesterday. It doesn't work at all.. both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions are broken.

I like how they reward late-comers with free upgrades, instead of people that buy shit when it first comes out... fucking ass backwards if you ask me.

Yeah, but Cubase 4 was 600, 5 is only 500, so really the "first buyers" of 5 with no previous versions are coming out ahead (provided most 4 users would actually want to switch right now).

Just had a couple of evenings to try it out.

There are quite a few improvements that I see immediately over SX3, small things that have annoyed the hell out of me that they've taken care of. (Some things I mention are probably things that came new in version 4)

WAV export is easier and also per track export, it's nice to be able to drag plugins between "slots" and I love the "new" sidechaining feature (well new for a SX3 user) - The new plugins look nicer and sound nicer and the new pitch correction plugin seems to do it's job though I don't think I'll be using it much. I had no problems opening more basic projects from SX3 but had problems with more complex ones (the ones where theres really a lot of channels & plugins going on & I had "maxed out" SX3's processing power)...

Stability doesn't seem to be an issue (not counting some SX3 projects when cubase 5 hangs forever or gives me the dreaded unstable dialog box), it hasn't crashed properly on me yet so first impression is that it's fairly stable.

One question though: Do you guys know if it's allowed to have two installations of Cubase 5 and move between them taking the dongle with you? I have a mixing & editing DAW at home that I would like to use with Cubase 5 as well as in the studio..

I'll post some more later when I've had more time with it.

I'm desperately looking for reasons not to move over to Cubase 5. They are heading in a direction completely opposite to what I want from a DAW, so I'm hoping to never have to find out.

Uhhh, what? I think the new features look fucking great! Explain?

I haven't ordered the upgrade yet. I'm holding out for the usual bug fixes, to be expected with any major DAW release.

Well at the risk of turning this into another ranting, OT thread, I'll give some brief points and call it a day.

Basically I was hoping that Steinberg would take some cues from Digi and streamline the UI and workflow.

They still don't:

-Have extremely flexible routing.
-Have a beat-detective equivalent.
-Default key commands for necessary processes (gotta set it all up yourself)
-Have a UI centered around 2 main windows. It's still menu-surfing, clutter mania.
-The automation.... enough said. Never enjoyed automating anything on Cubase.

The batch track export and such are very welcome improvements, but to be honest it doesn't feel like I tool I want to pay that much for to only do 50% of the job. I'm still gonna track and edit on 'Tools because it's better. Most of the new features seem geared at beat producers or musicians at home. I need something less bloated that focuses just on core tracking/editing/mixing efficiency and does all 3 superbly. I've been a Cubase user long before I was a 'Tools one, but the latter just won me over almost instantly. It just feels more direct and to the point.

I guess that's why there's still a lot of competition in this space. I feel exactly the opposite way about Cubase vs. Pro Tools. Cubase feels much more streamlined to me, faster, better for the work that I do. If you like Pro Tools better, then great, go with it. Pro Tools 8 looks like a major step up from anything previous.

To me, there's 3 main things (and countless little things that make a BIG difference put together) about Cubase that I rely on every day to work, that have sped up my workflow massively compared to when I was working in PT:

1.) Track Folders
2.) Drum List View
3.) Logical Editor

If Pro Tools incorporated features like those into version 8.5 or something, then they would seriously tempt me to switch. As I said, Pro Tools 8 looks amazing and I really respect what they are doing with the platform.

As a semi-experienced user of both, I too VASTLY prefer Pro Tools - Ermz hit the nail on the head with the "UI centered around 2 windows" thing, rather than just endless little pop-up menus in Cubase. I've customized Reaper to be pretty similar to PT, and for the price it's good enough for me! (and since I never record full bands, I'm not hurting from the lack of Beat Detective). AND PRO TOOLS HAS THE MOTHERFUCKING SMART TOOL :notworthy (and none of this "in Cubendo it's TOTALLY just as easy to constantly have your left hand hovering over the number keys to change edit modes!" hooha, please  )

I went back to XP 32 bit and now Cubase Studio 5 works perfectly. It still will permanently drop audio if I try and run it with my wireless network card running.. which is a little inconvenient. But they made a lot of performance optimizations, loads a lot faster now, and I like how it is still the same old Cubase interface and workflow I know and love. I wish I had two monitors to make fuller use of it but it isn't bad as is.
