Great info!

I like Spl Transient plugin to pull a little room out of samples. Just use the sustain knob. You can also pull back on the attack as well. Same idea really.

Was this a Sd 2.0 snare in the example? Sounded great!

I actually had this revelation on my last session, the snare was too thudy, but when I boosted the high end it just made the tail really harsh. I dup'd the track, added a quick gate/comp on the EQ'd track, and viola. Good read man.

Dude... great sounding drums \m/ ! Besides the snare, what did you do with the toms ? Are they real or SD2.0 ? Plugs ?

The toms are eqd, getting all that sandpaper/room sound out. Then its ran through a limit with a release of around 400ms around 6 db of gr. Sent to a verb and thats it.

Ived used many many many methods including gates comps limiters transient designers..... The special thing about this, or the key element for this particilar sound is that insanely fast attack. I know theres lots of dyamic processing available and some people prefer the 10-30 ms attack/fast release, but I never hear that method on professional mixes.

This trick is cool (normal parallel compression), but for drums I dig it more when you boost the low end and the top end by loads and mix it very subtly (they call it NY-style parallel comp.)

Im familiar with ny pc but for me it adds too much mush and becomes a problem when it comes to clarity. All I need is a very fine attack. Ive got room samples that can achieve that with so it saves time from mutilating my top snare. I actually never use parralel compression in that sense, only this way. I prefer using natural samples for ambience as well as a nice verb.

Wow, i love that snare dude! I unfortunately don't have Superior Drums, only Steven Slate Drums

Dont worry, you can use any samples! I wouldnt recommend slate for this particular method though because they are processed to the extreme and sound unatural if you process them more dynamically. Imo.

Thats probably because all the velocities are 127 and obviously this arrangement isnt a serious project so bare with me. Its purely a demonstration for acheiving attack.

Not feeling it at all. If you're going to these extremes to make your drums cut through then I'd say there's other problems in the mix. Whatever works though I guess...

Yeah, but to be honest mate, I feel you could make the snare cut through in a less obtrusive manner.

Ahhh, just goes to show how subjective this all is really! :)

I think this is an interesting approach, but the snare is average and those tom's sound fucking awful to me. Whatever works for the mix I guess. Also, does anyone else hear some substantial clipping on those drums with the 'attack'? Or is it just me?

I parrallel compress ever drum like that. But I send them
In a bunch of busses instead of duping tracks. Takes too much processing power.

+1, SPL TD is amazing. I use the shit out of it on any and most all room mics, snare, kick, etc.....

the attack just can't be cranked to high or you get crazy random spikes with a SUPER BRUTAL 'pop' kind of sound. ugly.
