This is a cover of "Veil of Maya" for forum member Youpimatin.
I still have to do the vocals so I'm waiting 'till I have the house to myself this weekend. :p

I don't have the best mixing environment right now, nor the best ears so I'm hoping to get some help to get this mix going in the right direction.
I know I have a lot of work to do and this is just a rough starting point, so let me have it. (There are a couple of guitar mistakes that I'm probably going to go back and redo at some point too.)

EDIT:
Here is a new version with a little tweaking and some vocals:

Loving it, but the verse riff on the right side isn't played right... when it repeats the ascending note pattern before moving to the B string part, it comes in a beat earlier than you're doing it.

That's cool to hear! :) You captured the vibe.

There are quite some little mistakes if you know what the individual parts should sound like. But I know this is a problem because the mix doesn't really allow you to hear all the details.
To help you out, the intro chords Jason is playing are just 2 powerchords: F and E played like this:

Code:
E|--------13--|--|-------------12--|--|
B|-13-----13--|--|-------12----12--|--|
G|-10--10-10--|--|-9-9-9-9---9-9---|--|
D|------------|--|-----------------|--|
A|------------|--|-----------------|--|
E|------------|--|-----------------|--|
       . . . . .

And I'm pretty sure Paul's chords are:

Code:
E|-----------|
B|-----------|
G|-----|---4-|
D|-3-5-|-2-2-|
A|-2-3-|-1-2-|
E|-1-1-|-0-0-|

So far for the demystification of Focus ;)

Thanks man, but I guess I can't find the part you're referring to. I know there are some differences in the playing, but I can't hear a timing thing.

Awesome, thanks so much for that. I didn't even know you posted here!
Yes, that part confused me a little. :p

I really appreciate the listen.

Hot damn man, sounds great! The distorted guitar tone sounds very digital I have to say; something about the nature of the distortion, can't quite put my finger on it (it's especially apparent in the arpeggiated section, where the lyrics are "Charmer who will be believed / by man who thirsts to be deceived.") Holy SHIT though, great job on the jazzy/clean parts; I wouldn't say they're particularly accurate, but I much prefer it this way, with some artistic license! I take it you own a fretless bass? ;) Sounds fantastic, and I never would've guessed the drums were programmed! I never knew DFHS had such loose sounding toms; normally too loose for my tastes, but they work perfectly for this. I feel the kick has a bit too much click; it's not like it's too "clicky," it's just all I really hear is click, not much beef; a relative thing. And how do you do those fucking awesome snare ghost notes? Can't wait to hear it with vox, and yeah, smart choice to wait for your young daughter to leave before you start screamin', you'll scare the bejeezus outta her

Sounds great and the playing is awesome. The picking on that riff before the first jazzy section is really tricky for me.

Yeah, I'm still contemplating the guitar tone. I'm going to be re-recording the guitars with the enlightenment provided by Tymon, so hopefully I can hit upon something a little nicer in the tone department.
Yes, I have a Dean fretless, nothing too terribly nice. (I'm going to build a nice one one of these days!)
I get the ghost notes on the snare just by using really low velocities in DFHS and arranging them with some care.

Wow, very impressive man...I don't think the guitars sound that digital to be honest. Much better than other POD tones I've heard. I also like how smooth the lead tone is. Awesome work.

Holy shit man, you've gotta share your rhythm patches, but most importantly, that lead patch!!

Well, I've never figured out how to do that, but I'll give it a look.

The rhythm is actually 3 different patches mixed together and with some post EQ, the lead is a single patch with some post EQ also.
