Dave Grohl's Sound City Documentary

There was an editorial in Tape-Op that summed it up pretty well.

It's a solid film, except where it blames Pro Tools as the reason for it closing - rather than the music industry dying.

What a cunt.
Nickelback is hundred times better than anything Grohl have ever done.

I don't like nickelback,I just hate this prick that much..

I'm not a fan of Grohl, but are you suggesting with any sincerity that you prefer Nickelback to old Foos, QOTSA, Nirvana, Probot etc?

On a side note I read a tweet from Dave grohl today that said "if you listen to a nickleback song backwards, you will hear messages from the devil. Even worse, if you listen to it forwards, you hear nickleback."

Okay that's amazing haha

Just gonna echo what's pretty much already been said here, but yeah, the film was a patronising wankfest indeed. I enjoyed watching it at first, because it was great from a technical standpoint, getting to see/hear a bit of history in some of the analogue realm. But by the same token I felt that the technical side of it was belittled and made to look incredibly secondary to the emotional nostalgic crap.

Surprisingly,I never liked any of those bands, especially Nirvana, long before I knew who Grohl was.

Trent was the breath of fresh air in that documentary. The guy advocating using both mediums for their respective strengths and just making music the best it can be. A pretty far cry from that secretary who said 'this is where real men came to record'. Seriously - that made the final cut?

This! :p You never here Sneap say, 'When the real men don't use amp sims and superior drummer' haha!

Regardless, it was still worth a watch, if even just to see how far mentality and practicality has come! Smaller industry, smaller budgets, less time, less tools and still more bands than ever (not saying that's necessarily a good thing) but still! We adapt, it seems!

This doc is now streaming on amazon prime so I watched it. It was ok but the whole time all I could think was with all those multi-multi millionaires who "love" this studio, why doesn't one of them just buy it?

Always the way, there. And good point. Didnt watch the doc but there's always people whining about something and never ponying up to do shit about it.

I remember when CBGB's was closing and everybody cried... just like they did with L'Amour... and nobody did shit about it... just whined.

John Varvatos of all people put his fashion store in CBGB's at least and tried to keep the "charm" of it alive...

If by charm you mean disgusting pile of shit, beerstained sticky floor, residual coke, the stench of puke, the multitude of shitty bands, etc....

Fuck CBGB's.

haha. I saw that. It's hilarious going into a famed punk rock club and seeing $700 pre-ripped jeans for sale.

Because they all probably know that owning a recording studio is a terrible business move. Plus Dave Grohl bought the damn Neve. And he already has a studio. And who the hell would want that dump without the Neve in it? Sure, good times were had there, but from the way they make it sound the only thing it had going for it was the board. You'd need to sink A LOT of money and time into that place. And most the people in that doc probably do have their own recording spaces.

I quite enjoyed the movie actually. I just have to say that I actually kinda agree with that manager chick. Real musicians can record to tape and make it sound good. As much hyper-editing and replacement and re-amping and punching as we do nowadays, to me it cheapens the whole thing. I've done many records to tape with solid musicians. Give me that ANY DAY over a group of moronic 18 year olds trying to sound like Attack Attack who don't know their way around a hairbrush, let alone a guitar.

haha. Obviously I was being hyperbolic and more commenting on the weird "SAVE THE STUDIO!" element to the filmmaking that made it feel like a telethon at times. That said, Nick Fleetwood could buy the studio, fix it, and rehire the staff for the next fifty years and barely scratch what he'll make on tour this summer.

I thought the first 30 to 45 minutes were cool and then it all turned extremely dumb to me. I am not so much of a fan of Grohl after seeing this. They talk at the beginning about how they had to buy the board to stay current and that it saved the studio and blah blah blah, then they say they hate things changed to digital and it killed the studio. Dumb. Either or the first 30 minutes ruled. All of this has probably been said in this post, but I am too lazy to read all 3 pages. \m/
