Has everyone got this album? Essential or overrated? Ive been reading up about it on the web, and I find that some people actually think it's overrated. On the contrary, it blew me away on first listen, and it gets better each time.

What's the story with the bass work on this album? Originally played by Varg, but I've read that in respect to Euronymous's family, the bass tracks were removed and Necrobutcher re-recorded them. Is that correct?

Also, our Erik has mentioned that there are 2 bass tracks on this album - do I remember that correctly? If so, could that be both tracks by Varg and Necrobutcher? Weird question I know, but I figured it might be a possibility.

Masterpiece, essential, dunno what else to say...

While the band originally claimed that Hellhammer had re-recorded the tracks, Hellhammer has revealed in recent interviews how that isn't really the case. The bass tracks are by Varg. Occasionally, there are two bass tracks, one distorted and one clean: both by Varg.

The BEST album ever without competition, though others are not that far behind.

The double bass tracks were both recorded by Varg (as Erik said, that crap about re-recording was just bullshit spoken in respect of Euronymous' family.

I know that some people have a hard time getting into the vocals of Attila, but those are fucking great, though many people may need a few listens to understand just that.

I can't stop wondering how it'd sound with Dead on vocals, though...

Attila is slightly annoying at times, like in "Life Eternal" ("YOU MAST! GET ETÖÖ-YÖÖ-RNAL") and the title track, but generally he does very well. People only whine because they expect every black metal band to have another Quorthon clone on vocals. I applaud originality.

never heard it, but i do like Attia's vocals in Aborym

After wasting $12 on Grand Declaration of War, I gave up on Mayhem. I'd rather here my grandmother's queefers than listen to that shit again.

Haha. You can't fucking dismiss Mayhem based on "A Grand Declaration of War", because THAT RECORD WAS RECORDED BY ANOTHER BAND ALSO CALLED MAYHEM THAT HAPPENS TO HAVE ONE MEMBER IN COMMON WITH THE MAYHEM THAT RECORDED "DE MYSTERIIS DOM SATHANAS."

This album rocks :) very grim and...grimmer. Very damn good basically. I thought the vocals fitted the music perfectly, so no worries bout that.

Wait, just to clarify: although it's untrue, the band originally claimed that Hellhammer, the drummer, re-recorded the bass tracks, and NOT Necrobutcher?

I don't think I've ever heard Dead's vocals. Can we clarify which recordings Dead appears on? Live in Leipzig is one - what is Out from the Dark? That appears to have some 'Sathanas tracks but with Dead on vocals?

Yes. Necrobutcher was not in the band at the time. Euronymous kicked Necrobutcher out before the recording of DMDS due to wimpdom. Hellhammer then proceeded to invite him into the band again after Euronymous' demise.

"Out from the Dark" is an extremely rare live bootleg (Sorath has it.) The official releases with Dead are limited to "Live in Leipzig" and two compilation tracks on the now extremely rare comp. "Projections of a Stained Mind" (I have it,) which are the only studio tracks with Dead ever. These are "Freezing Moon" and "Carnage." These have since been re-released and bootlegged on various formats.

I could spread some mp3s from Out From the Dark of you just bitch about it a bit. Tracklist is:
Side A
1. Pure Fucking Armageddon
2. Funeral Fog
3. Freezing Moon
Side B
4. Buried by Time and Dust
5. Necrolust
6. Chainsaw Gutsfuck
7. Deathcrush

Could be in a slightly different order (Side B) but I think that's it.
