Can we please just all agree that 1) less is more 2) its not the gear, its the musician, and 3) if the song is written well it'll make up for the production, so everybody can stop dispensing this shit like its some kind of unheard of sage advice?

Production matters not if the music is extremely well composed. Just look at Burzum's "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss". Not the best production but a DAMN good album.

i actually sort of thought about this as i was working on a dysrhythmia review last night; Interference, while a great album with awesome music/musicianship, left me a little parched partly due to the thin production (esp after seeing them live). Pretest, on the other hand, is amazing production-wise, and what i had hoped for in Interference.

It's sad to see emo kids whining about how much they hate everything, playing with several thousand dollars of equipment each that their parents bought them, and not even being able to play chords correctly, then seeing an awesome band playing on older guitars and not much more than the amps that come with the starter kits and a 5 piece drumset and showing more talent than many professional bands and being insulted because people think their equipment is cheap so their music isn't even worth a listen (comments on local badns just starting out)

example 1: the new Last Days of April record seriously lacks dynamics and is subsequently kinda flat and boring. A little production umph would take it to the next level.

example 2: a long time ago, I played a show with a friend's band in Colorado. They were okay when I had seen them before, but this night they borrowed our (reasonably bad-ass) gear and sounded AWESOME. Marshalls half-stacks CAN make a different over Peavy combos.

example 3: listen to albums recorded and mixed by Steve Albini vs. albums recorded by him and mixed elsewhere. HUGE difference usually, for the better in the latter case IMO.

but in most cases, yes what you say is true.

Avi: Totally agree, but I am just sick to death of people saying, for example ina post about what modifications Stevie Ray Vaughn used in his Tube Screamer or whatever,

"Dude, you can have all the best gear in the world but it won't make a difference if you can't play. Just think about that."

Like they're fucking Confucius and Mohammed and Mozart all rolled up in one.

what I hate to see:
struggling bands who are awesome, but are held back by shitty gear

sucky bands with expensive gear who, more often than not, don't know how to use it. it's usually some fucker with a Mesa who has no clue how to blend his tone with the rest of the band. Lord help them if they have two of em.
