Death/black metal article on Washingtonpost.com

This article is at fault for being painfully one-sided.

Sure, there is a side of extreme metal that is cheesy. But, this guy generalizes this small sect of the metal world to be representative of all underground metal because he doesn't once suggest that, *gasp* perhaps not ALL underground metal plays into these stereotypes.

He uses selective quotes that don't nearly tell the whole story. "Impaled Nazerene" are totally tongue-in-cheek, and anyone who listens to them knows this.

The writer faults these bands for having a good time, doing what they love, and suggests that they take themselves too seriously, which couldn't be further from the truth.

how odd
Exactly, who cares what that guy thinks, this simply is the way people who are not actually into (Death) Metal look at it, and don't even bother to try and change it, it's completely pointless and a waste of your energy...

It just confirmes the prejudice they already had against (Death) Metal, it teaches them nothing new.

People, this is the way "non-metal" people look at Metal, period. And who cares, they don't care about "our" music, so why should we care about what they think of it? Accept it! There's much more important things to worry about.

ENTHRONED FUCKING SLAYS! PRAISE THE MIGHTY BELGIAN HORDE!

Personally I thought that article was really funny.

Impaled Nazerene were probably messing on with them, they're not even serious about themselves are they?

This is true. I've always cared way too much what others think about me.

But on another level, the idealist in me assumes that if people weren't fed this nonsense, I would have an easier time finding friends. As it is, people that I might potentially like lose respect for me when I mention metal. And yes, that means they're idiots whom I don't want to be friends with ultimately, but...

I agree...who cares what people think, i get weird looks before people even know what i listen to..simply from how i dress (leather jacket, boots, black long hair, etc.)...stereotypes will always exist...get over it.

This is what i Hate About Media and that guy covering music.
The problems i find with this articles are

1) How they concentrate on one band and make that Band So big and famous just to shout it down to get 1% extra profit. Example off this is a band (i can't remember their name but they are supposed to be clowns and they talk about kill and smoke weed Kinda Punk/thrash metal (pantera type)) Thats not metal. Thats just a pure bullshit that 1% off the population listen to. Metal Fans get then critizied to what they listen to.
2) Frankly which one is more productive the Phrase "Hit me baby one more time" or "Peace Sells...but whos buying"? One talks about "hitting" her one more time, adn the other Is talking about How Peace sells (btw, Megadeth wrote this song to support us that we are not just stupid people Metal heads)
3) OZZY OSBRONE IS A PIONEER IN METAL??? DOES HE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT?
4) People Like to paint them selves cause its an Art. Hell Kiss Did it and i'm pretty sure that guy listens to Kiss. SO there you have it.
Got more, but these are sufficient.
:)

You have a point with all of those however the Kiss make up was basically stupid and fun. The make up say Immortal wear is meant to be all corpsy and stuff.

That was quite funny, but the guy needs to actually listen to a somewhat wider of range of music I'm thinking

The guy actually doesn't even mention actually listening to these bands.. he's just taking selected opinions from the magazine.......

To me, you're the 'wrong kind of person', That wants to keep metal in a closet, like some retarded child the world shouldn't see.

You honestly think there's a difference in the reason Kiss wears makeup and the reason Immortal does?

Have you EVER looked at a corpse (or a picture of one) and though "THAT LOOKS LIKE HORGH! COOL!"

"..and stuff" = stupid and fun  :p

I've never stood behind keeping people in the dark about metal. I think it's sort of...lame actually. Why do it? So we can drudge out another few decades of ignorance? I know this is a 50/50 issue. To me, I'll admit it's funny at first the way people think of metal, but only for a little while. After that, it's sad and aggravating.

I don't want to keep metal in the closet. Hell, I want more people to get into it, but not everyone. If too many capitalistic people start using metal to make money, it'll become more of a product that an art-form. It's already happened with nu-metal, it very nearly did happen to death metal.

At the moment, bands like Opeth, for example, make music because that's what they love. I'm not saying money is irrelevant, because if they made no money, they wouldn't be able to keep going. Because of this, they make music that the vast majority of people don't understand. If they decided to make as much money as they could, they would lose everything that makes them what they are now.

I don't mind bands making a lot of money, because quite often they deserve to. However, I do mind bands comprimising their music (and their fans, for that matter) just to get a bit more money. It all becomes formulaic and generic, and that's not what i want from any music, not just metal
