My friend and I are doing a 3-5 minute presentation on the evolution of extreme metal. What bands and videos should we include in our chronological breakdown? Keep in mind the evolution of the growl n' shit.
Look to Motörhead... Accept, Saxon, and stuff like that (the sex pistols too, punk)... Mercyful Fate... they're often cited as influences by venom, overkill, metallica, slayer, death, possessed, repulsion
Alright, we got:
For Precursors to the Growl and Influences:
Screamin' Joe Hawkins (lol)
King Crimson
Throbbing Gristle
Minor Threat (for the punk aspect)
For early Extreme Metal:
-Venom
-KKKIIIINGGGG DIAMOND
Thrash:
-Metallica
-Megadeth
-Slayer
-Strapping Young Lad (for modern)
Death:
-Death
-Napalm Death
-Opeth
-Bloodbath
Black:
-Immortal
-Mayhem
We just threw the vid together, it's good. In b4 "THAT'S NOT [something] METAL!"
Here's the vid if anyone wanted to watch. We threw it together in a hurry and most/all of the footage is ripped from Google videos. Cheers to those who helped with the selection, and sorry for forgetting about Morbid Angel.
It was ok, but there were a few odd choices and omissions. For example I think Possessed should have been added as the bridge between trash and death metal. Also Napalm Death is more grindcore than death. I would also have not used Bloodbath because it is essentially a homage to influential 90's Swedish death metal bands like Entombed which I would have used instead.
I did find the screaming roots pretty cool, and never really thought of the influence King Crimson had on it.
Dude that Immortal video was quite comical!! Not a huge BM fan, but I hope those guys don't take themselves too seriously.
Anyway, for the earlier stuff, Bathory and good ol' CF (or even Hellhammer) should not have been missed. They were pretty much the beginners, along with Venom! Hopefully they liked it!
There was also some real old shit back in the '60s (before Sabbath). A band called Black Widow. Footage of them is probably close to impossible to find though...
