I guessed some other sneapsters don't know Deathcode Society yet. Here are the two songs demoed in 2009.

Listen with care and pleasure :

I seriously fucking love this 2-song EP. It's like everything genius from Emperor combined with the goddamn world ending and angels dying and volcanos imploding on themselves and everyone dying and just... really cool shit.

Any news on the band? What have you guys been up to, and what's coming next?

Sounds like a way better version of Abigor (or other old sympho BM that didn't suck). The production itself sounds like a btter Anthems. Pretty good. I don't like the Dimmu Borgir inspired vocal pacing, or how he sometimes veers into modern metal style phrasing, but everything else is very nice. Even for me (I find sympho-bm to be the gayest thing ever actually, mainly because most of it is just throw-away metal with queer keys) this is highly admirable. Keep at it man!

The labored composition shows. Care to share some of the quality textbooks you have encountered on the subject?

Symphonic metal only works if it's approached as multi-layered "classical" composition, at which our friend Arnaud has shown his proficiency. The problem with other bands, as kvoid stated above, is that they think that some lousy keyboard parts over standard metal riffing constitutes "symphonic" music. No, it does not.
Deathcode Society is a band that deserves heaps of attention, and I cannot. Fucking. Wait. For the next effort.

Hey Arnaud, thank you for posting!
I stumbled upon your demo sometime last year and have been waiting for any updates since then. Didn't expect to find them in a thread here, but all the better!
I'm a big fan of your demo and introduced it to many of my friends... I don't think remember anyone not liking it.

So I wish you best of luck and the strength to carry on with this project. Looking forward to it!

Thats awesome that you browse the forum, im happy to say im a huge fan of the two songs you did release. I am excited to hear more!!!

I spent 6 years recording my album, most of it was learning how to do everything and not being happy with my production. Writing symphonic black metal is not an easy thing! So you have my sympathy, I just wish i was able to compose like you!

i've read the name "deathcode society" before but didn't click on it cause i thought it would be something completely different

but i have to say i'm absolutely blown away by this, i love sympho-black metal more than anything else, and there is not much quality stuff like this around

i think benjamins voice fits perfectly, he sounds a bit like ihsahn just with more power

and +1 to sympho-stuff being hard to compose, i think the songwriting on this really does deserve heaps of attention,
i've tried to make music like this for years now (i also did the midi import into sequencer thing), but i just can't even write one decent symphonic black metal song, every other metal genre is easier

really looking forward to hear more from it

Devil ! I did not expect such a lot of kind words. I thought my demo had been listened to by my family and some friends of mine, + net travelers, and I am gladly surprised the high quality members of this small club seem to know the work yet.

Concerning Jesus picture, I also found it incredibly funny : it changes from the usual clichés and fits perfectly to the music and the lyrics.

About the sympho black metal genre, I must confess that I usualy dislike it. My absolute reference remains "ANthems to the Welkin at Dusk" by the mighty Emperor. Some mentionned Abigor : though I find their earliest works interesting, listening to them bothers me due to the really bad production. Though, I am a huuuuge fan of their last releases; "Fractal Possession" and "Time is the sulphur in the veins of the saints" are great. The last one, especially, blows me. It is so intense and intelligent ! Really noble black art !
I don't dislike Demon Burger; I would say there's a couple of very good songs, but I listen to their stuff as well as I could listen to ABBA albums, if you see what I mean.
With Emperor, I think the masters of the genre were the french horde Anorexia Nervosa. "New Obscurantis Order" sounds like a doomsday. I really dig it. I also appreciated the second Carach Angren album, "Lammendam" : creative and unkitsch.

As someone talked about Benjamin, he sure his a damn good vocalist. I was searching for someone with a good controled voice and abilities to scream and to fry. To say the least, I was dreaming about a mixture of Ihsahn and evin Townsend. I went on searching the bird on the Internet, and discovered a Swiss band called Sybreed. I listened and... here sang the singer I was searching for. The funny thing in it was that Benjamin lived... 5 minutes from my home. :kickass:

About Sympho Black Metal composition, I agree with every comment here.
A sympho black metal song is the easiest thing to write badly.
Too many bands, in my opinion, are just composing that stuff imitating the old receipes every horror movie score composer use. And it is so stupid ! Listening to Demon Burger, for example, I have the feeling they always use the same harmonic progressions I have heard in every Hollywood blockbuster. It is absolutely not interesting to write again and again the "Emperor's march" of Star Wars ! And there are plenty other ways to compose dark and melancoly music.

How did I study musical theory ? Someone asked me about books.
First, I think the most clever thing to do is to read an encyclopedy of western music, from the Middle Age to the XX century, just to know about composers, and get curious about their works, and then listen to their stuff with a better understanding.
Then, reading an history of music is very useful, because such a book has to deal with musicological issues in a very vulgarized way. It's also very useful for another reason : it allowed me to know how the musical language evolved and turned, and why. It gave me a precious tip : musical evolution was mainly due to the facvt new instruments and tones appeared. So it taught to me the think about the "matter" of the music.
After that, I read some theory books, mainly about harmony. You can pick up any book written for conservatory pupils.
I also read book written by the Masters : "Le traité d'orchestration", by Hector Berlioz, was very useful. Berlioz was both a great composer and an incredible writter. Anybody here should read his "Memoires" (I think it has been translated in english", since they are full of very interesting considerations about how writting good music. One sentence remained as my moto :

Do as the masters did, and you will do well

That's why I downloaded some masterpieces MIDI transcriptions. I concentrated a lot on the Overture of "Tristan and Isolde" by Wagner, just to understand how it was possible to make sound musical such a chord (containing almost every notes of the scale), orchestrating it cleverly. I was also curious about the use of this kind of integral chromatism, I mean, this technique allowing you to use each note of a chord to change one half tone up or down the general tonality of the song.

Well, I have to go, so I will write another post to give more details.
You can listen to this : to be studied !

Thanx Jarkko !

What do you mean about aesthetic issues ? I would be glad about knowing it. Maybe do I repeat myself, but it may be the only Internet place where I feel well. It's a real treasure : people are eager to share their knowledge and feelings, and are often clever enough to take every critical points of view as an advice.
Someone on that post told the songs were clipping. I think the Youtube conversion destroyed a lot of the sound quality. If you need to hear something closer to the original sound quality, you can click on the "Reverbnation" link on my signature.
I confess everything is not perfect, but can tell you it was a hell of a mix...

Ah, didn't notice the Reverbnation link, thanks for pointing it out!

I absolutely didn't mean the mix is bad or anything, quite on the contrary, it works really well, and such crowded material is always a bitch to get right. It's mainly some level balance things here and there, some spots where I would have rode the vocals up a bit or pushed the HH back a bit, and so on. Like I said, nothing major, and overall it's an awesome piece of work! :)

Well, with DCS, I have often the feeling of doing something "too much" for me. Ten years to write for songs, one week and a half to mix each song, three days to record the guitar parts until I'm satisfied with the performance...
For info, drums were truly recorded, not programmed. I kept every acoustic element, and blended kick, snare and toms with samples. The drums were shit cans : a friend of us lended us his rehearsal room, and seeing the drumset almost made me cry... As we were on the first floor, the room was quaking as if it was about to crumble. Really. But it the end, with a lot of work and tricks, it has been possible to work out this epic session:loco:

Tomorrow, I'll post a bit more about classical writing techniques applied to metal, because I think there are some little spots to clarify.

Wow, you make me appreciate symphonic BM!
No clichés just great music!

I would love to know more about how and what you learned listening classical stuff. After 11 years of playing bass/guitar i'm finally beginning to study music theory... so can't wait to learn something new!:)

I was thinking about writing ten lines about the subject I was supposed to cover. But I am finaly going to spend far more time about it than what I was first expected. I even think about including sound clips as illustrations. So... Let's see you tomorrow, and thanx again for the kind words !
