Delain- April Rain

For those of you who are fans of this band, as I am, I'm just wondering about your thoughts on the song "April Rain". I'm not usually a fan of female fronted bands but I just can't get enough of this song...the video makes it even better!!

Her voice sounds a bit stronger on this song. I'm still not sure how I feel about Delain as a whole, though. There's a very pop quality to the band that I'm not sure I can get past. I'll have to sit with this for a bit and see if I come to a definitive opinion. :/

I like Delain, but I think eventually they will have to differentiate their sound a bit away from Within Temptation's. Delain is a quality band no doubt, but I still prefer both eras of Nightwish over them.

You have a bluntness that I'm not sure I can get away with here. :D
I guess I see no need to dance around this. I'm not trying to be insulting. To my ear, they're a Pop band. I see it as being no different than people taking offense at me calling Brainstorm a Power Metal band.

People should like what they like. If you like a Pop band... than you like a Pop band. And if you don't think they're a Pop band... than who cares? My buddy Britt recently turned me on to the new Voyager disc. Do you know why I'm loving that disc? Because the lead singer reminds me of Simon LeBon from Duran Duran. I friggin love Duran Duran.

In the same way that Ratt, Cinderella or Whitesnake are Pop bands? :p
Are you asking me if I think Ratt, Cinderella and Whitesnake were Pop bands? If so, I'd say no. Or, are you asking me if I take issue with you classifying them as such? If so, no again.

I wouldn't classify them as such, because no one in their day thought of them as Pop. Metal has obviously grown much more aggressive since the 80s, and is also far less popular. So in retrospect, given their melodic sensibilities and their popularity, I take no issue with people looking back on them as Pop. However, those who do so, likely do so because they're not familiar with context of the time during which that music was created. Regardless, the frequency with which "You're in Love" comes blaring from my car stereo speakers on a warm summer day, won't be diminished because some folks may now choose to classify them as Pop.

In the 80's some people didn't like Tom Kiefer's voice because it was so rough and grindy sounding.Compared to the aggressive singers of today,I'd say Tom sounded like Britney Spears:lol:

I'd say that's because they are a Pop band.

I don't know if I'd agree with you totally here, but I do understand what you're saying. I don't really consider Delain's sound as "pop" in the states compared to Pink, Kelly Clarkson, and Katy Perry. In other words, I still think Delain sounds very different from American mainstream music, but their music does have a "pop" sensibility.

If you view music as a continuum, with Pop at one end and Metal at the other, and all bands as falling in between, than it depends on what you define the Metal end as being. Let's not get crazy, and keep Black and Death Metal out of it. For the sake of example, I'll use my favorite band, Nevermore, as the Metal standard (like I do typically do :heh:). I now put Kelly Clarson on one end of that continuum and Nevermore on the other. Now who does Delain fall closer to? I say Kelly. But ultimately, this is nothing more than my perspective. When I hear Delain, I want to immediately shut the music off, because it's so melodic and so polished and feels so soulless. This is the same reaction I have towards Pop. But again, this is only my perspective and matters only to me. This is why, ultimately, discussions on genres are so pointless. It's all about the perspective of the individual.

In other words, I still think Delain sounds very different from American mainstream music, but their music does have a "pop" sensibility.
That I couldn't say. The only exposure I have to mainstream music if what I hear when I'm not listening to music; in a department store, flipping channels on the TV, etc.

Delain says they are a pop band done metal style. "Musically, Delain (just as WT or Nightwish) writes and plays pop-songs"
