IIRC, Eric Peterson of Testament has said something about using a Boss digital delay- DD3? DD6?- set to 400 ms on all his rhythm tracks. I'd assume it's mixed very low, and probably sounds more like a reverb than a delay... Didn't Andy confirm this in one of the Testament threads?

behind the solo and using a slight delay (400/500ms) just sat in there."

buss them to a aux then use little delay maybe....

He means stick the delay on the lead track, not the rhythm track.

I remember Andy talking about Eric's delay use on this - he said the dude loves delay, and would even put it on a snare track if you let him.

That said, I really don't think Andy tracked any of their stuff with a delay running.

Yep. Like he said. Delay does not belong on regular distorted metal guitar rhythms.

Unless (of course) it is totally staccato and the delay is part of the riff ... (can give very cool effects!)

If the rhythm GTR needs some ambiance I'd always use a bit of delay over reverb. I'd do it to tempo, most likely an 8th note, maybe 3 repeats and very very low in the mix so that it's almost subliminal. I'd also roll off the high end on the delay to push it even farther behind in the mix. But yeah for heavy GTRs delay muddies things up.
