Demon Child – Shadow Cult
Sound Riot Records – SRP18 – 27th November 2002
By Russell Garwood

Demon Child is a black metal band, heavily influenced by the likes of early Emperor. Taking this into account, the band have a relatively unoriginal sound; Deimos’ vocals are standard black metal screams with relatively little variation, but suit the music well. The keyboards (E. Heinonen) are used to provide atmosphere – occasional instrumental sections help fragment the relatively unforgiving songs, but for the most part the synths provide support, not lead melody. Pyromaniac’s drums are fast and skillfully performed, slightly unoriginal, they are nevertheless fitting, and keep up with the changing atmospheres. The guitars and bass of Charon ring of early BM and hold some melody, while occasional solo elements are well performed.

Despite their lack of originality, Demon Child play well, and their music is unusually extreme for a symphonic sound. "Shadow Cult" will be welcomed by all lovers of aggressive black metal, and may find agreement with symphonic black metal fans as well. With some development, Demon Child could be an impressive collective, and I look forward to hearing further work
