Our favourite two meter tall, beer-swilling Germanic thrasher unleashes ten more (butcher-approved) slices, just in time for Destruction’s 25th Anniversary world tour. A few guests were invited to the party, namely Vinnie Moore (opening, acoustic-begun title cut), Canuck Jeff Waters (Annihilator) and Exodus’ Gary Holt, both adding solos to ‘Urge (The Greed Of Gain)’ and former Destruction string-bender Harry Wilkens (Mad Butcher EP through Cracked Brain), amongst others, firing on all cylinders. That said, elsewhere Mike (Sifringer) proves he’s no guitar slouch. Vying for back-of-the-tour-shirt lyrical catchphrase are “De-evolution, the world is out of hand” and “Cruelty always wins” (from ‘Vicious Circle’). Little extras give each tune a distinction, no easy feat after so many albums and a couple decades (albeit, not continuous). ‘Elevator To Hell’ features intended broadcast voiceover towards the end. Schmier is yelping like a youngster all over the place! Basically there’s no rest throughout the album! ’Vicious Circle - The 7 Deadly Sins’ starts slowly but sharply kicks below the Bible belt (maybe that’s where his off-kilter wail comes from?) ending with monks chanting in Latin. ‘Last Desperate Scream’ begins with a modern, Pantera/Sepultura staccato bounce that quickly dissipates. Drummer Marc Reign has really upped the ante, in terms of rolls/fills this time around, providing a fuller, bombastic bottom end. ‘Violation Of Morality’ meanders at a traditional heavy metal pace, but that’s seven songs in! Lest you think Schmier would limp to the finish (shame on you!), ’Odyssey Of Frustration’ jumps right in, greeting the listener with a wild guitar break only 15 seconds in! An aural battering never felt so good.
