Did anyone else know there was a recent Fear Factory album released?

^Negative. Mechanize is 10,000x better than Transgression. I enjoy it quite a bit. Hoglan is so much better of a drummer than Hererra, and Dino still shits out better riffs than Christian. I thought the latter case was in question when Archetype came out, because it's great, but Christian was terrible on Transgression.

haha, yeah... the drums sound like a drum machine, but other than that I don't think it's that bad... but then again, I've never really been a big Fear Factory fan, so... haha

Demanufacture is much better, and the drums are a disgrace on this new album, Hoglan is the shit! But I still like some of the songs on it, there are some good moments.

I agree. I grew up with Demanufacture and Obsolete. I haven't been able to get into them since. I was hoping that this album would be good when I saw that Dino was back, and Gene on drums, but I don't like it at all.

Avoided it like twilight-core... and after all the handbags-at-dawn bitch-fighting over the name... i find myself not actually wanting to listen to them at all...

dudes this is a fear factory record, so machinegun-like drums is a must.
Herrera is a very good drummer (ok not better than Gene) and has been replaced/quantized to hell like Gene many times on FF records.
Even Dino has been quantized in the past, basically they wanted the bassdrum and guitar playing the note at the very same millisecond.

Yeah but Hoglan can sound like a machine anyway - quantizing him even more to where the life of the performance is nonexistent instead of just minimized is an insult to that guy and his playing.

+1

It still sounds good though :D I can't get enough of the machine gun riffs

Thing is though...Gene can actually play it clean live. Herrera has a reputation for sloppy live playing, and Gene doesn't just pretend that toms are there for show. He plays the style better (drumming is better on City/SYL/Alien/New Black than the majority of the FF releases). Demanufacture and Obsolete are really the last FF albums worth paying any attention to...maybe other than Archetype. Digimortal and Transgression are worthless.

I was never bothered by Raymond's comparatively minimalistic style. In fact, I thought he was a key element to the sound that made the band initially famous. And I also really liked his drumming on Archetype.

The reason why Transgression sucked so hard... and this new one IMO too, is the lack of quality songs and riffs.

Dino's playing was much more minimalistic back in the day, yet ten times more memorable.

And if Raymond was a no-go because of lacking skill... then why is Burton in the band? ;)

Hey man, I actually like Burt.... on record. And he had his fair share of influence on modern metal vocals (mixture between clean and harsh vocals). But he also had his more than fair share of atrocious live performances.

still it's industrial music so who gives a shit if everything is quantized to death?
That's the purpose of this style of music.
By the way in powershifter there's even a part (with the hihat going like crazy) that is impossible to play with just two hands.... uhm I guess that is an overdub or maybe just a drum machine.

I really liked this record. Drums I expected to be machine like. I agree that Burton sounds good on record , but cannot do cleans live for shit. Auto Tune was invented for people like him ... cool ideas but just can't totally pull it off without studio magic... like I love Resurrection but he cannot do that song live
