Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth , Emperor.

Seriously now, is there some reason that all these bands decided to have essentially the same type of face paint? Is it just trying to have the "metal" image or something?

Like I said it's similar to the L.A. Glam bands adopting the use of eyeliner, hair spray and spendex, the more over the top the better. Both were trying to out do the previous band. I think the black metal bands simply wanted to come off as scary and they were more goofy than anything. KISS was more scary and they were just an average rock band... King Diamond is the only one that still wears the paint and looks fucking evil. These guys can't hold a candle to him.

You're not going to get much sympathy here as those really wouldn't be considered "old school". I personally like the bands but this is a forum and you have to learn to roll with the punches. Toughen up and don't forget Satyricon next time...

I didn't forget any bands, i just posted the ones that i really use to listen alot when i was younger (the ones that really changed..)

Here's a question for you did you take their image seriously as a kid? Thinking back did you like the image because it got a reaction out of your parents? And third can you honestly look at those photographs now with a straight face? There's quite a difference between Venom to King Diamond to Immortal isn't there? Seems like the image came first to the music as the years went by...

Love black metal......I generally love all of its mutations, as well.

Emperor released, IMO, the two greates BM albums in Nightside and Anthems. However, overall, I feel Enslaved is the best band spawned by this genre (and a top 5 post 1990 band, overall).

If nothing else, BM and its mutations have been the most creative and progressive metal sub-genre.

My favs:
Emperor
Enslaved
Immortal (later material likely to appeal to non-BM fans)
In the Woods
Arcturus
Borknagar
Mayhem
Cradle of Filth (call them what you will)
Hades
Watain
Deathspell Omega
Winterfylleth
Borknagar
Ulver
some Dimmu

I like a fair bit of the earlier BM stuff such as Mayhem, Emperor, Enslaved, Dark Throne, Ulver, Arcturus, Gorgoroth etc
I’m not really following much newer stuff but Deathspell Omega are interesting…

not that I am disagreeing ... cause I'm not, but a thought since we are most of the way through this decade arent albums released in the 90s getting close to being Old school? I mean I joined this forum in what 2002 and the 80's were considsered OS ... so in 4 years are 90's going to be considered OS? or will the 90's which actually did have some great metal still have the stigma of being ummm new? old school black metal is still old school .... or is the term old school and this forum just limited to tired old 70's and 80's music and the same metallica/megadeth threads that have been typed out for years ... just a thought :saint: ... but yes your right ... "Toughen up and don't forget Satyricon next time"

Interesting thoughts. Yes I believe that for many of us (over 30-40 yo) Old School is the 70-80's, but in 10-20 more years what will be consider old school and ancient school?, or will NWOBHM become the classic music of metal? :saint:

I am 100% in agreement with this. However most of the 'best thrash bands of all time' treads here are started by people that are not regulars.

I think it's because of the description of this forum that reads underneath the 'Old School' moniker:

"Talk about 80s Metal, Thrash etc"

I do not know how the regulars feel about this. But I would like to.

I see your point but I guess BM isn't something regularly discussed here and really I think that's more of a popularity issue. I'm used to seeing the authentic old school stuff here. A BM thread in this forum sticks out. I have a ton of genres that I listen to so personally, I'm all for talking about whatever. I guess what didn't help the thread was the OP getting upset at some minor shots.

I do love the early CoF stuff, Emperor, Arcturus, Dimmu, Satyricon, Immortal, Marduk, Zyklon (B), and In The Woods. Never been able to get into Darkthrone or Mayhem, tho.

Speaking for myself I know what the moniker of the forum says, but i have said it (and will continue) that I don't mind people talking about new bands as long as they have an Old School influence. As for Black, Death, Industrial, Goth, Glam, etc., I don't mind discussions at all as long as people keep it with respect to other posters and bands. If somebody does't like a particular thread just skip it.

Hmm, I agree the OP got a upset far too easy. Generally speaking its wise to lurk a little before you post to get a feel for the forum however as Hawk pointed out the description of this forum reads underneath the 'Old School' moniker: "Talk about 80s Metal, Thrash etc", it’s a good place to get a clue. But as early 90's Black & Death metal is now considered by others as Old School maybe its time for a rethink...

Why did i waste my time joining this forum, you guys think your so "funny" with that your posting, im not joking around or anything. If only there was someone like me here. Freaks.
I would say that I'm the resident Old School forum BM fan though i am sure Psychonaut and Hawk would claim to be so over me... i would of posted awhile ago but was away in Costa Rica hanging with family and meeting Wyv.. :kickass:

Primordial's earlier material was pretty BM. I kind of have to disagree being that Venom coined the term Black Metal and basically Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and Bathory are considered Black Metal and they all started in the early 80's in a way i would consider them Old School. And actually behemoth (imho had one of the best dm cds of 2008), dimmu borgir and emperor have been around since the early 90's.

I don´t know if Venom coined the term, but I do consider them along the other bands you mentioned as forerunners of the black metal sub-genre. Of course most people you will talk to, will consider Celtic Frost thrash. I guess this discussion will always get around the same way.

Steppenwolf coined phrase "heavy metal", but few would consider them to be a heavy metal bland. Likewise, I don't really see Venom as a "black metal" band, at least not what black metal morphed into by the late 80s... despite their song/album of that name.

I thought the intent of the original poster was to mock Black Metal with the photos he placed. I guess I was wrong.
In fact, there have been more than a few "let's make fun of Black Metal bands" threads here in the Old School Forum. If the original post had been more specific, like say, posting the pictures with some TEXT that explained that he admired these bands, then the thread would have had some direction.

Pss, pss, ehem. The original:
