discuss the beauty, intricacy, and power of [motw] music

Hmmmm, I started all of this so I should say some serious things. Hmmm, I'm not very good at it. Hmmm, here I go.

Maudlin of the Well is to me, has simply the most amazing music...EVAR! My favourite song would have to be...hmm, a hard choice...Sleep Is A Curse. The lyrics are awesome, it's a very introspective, intimate song. I especially love the acoustic guitars, and the best moment has to be when the drums come into it, and violins surge and soar. Man, that part is beautiful, almost celtic like its got some influence from that style of music. On the same note I think that all of the interludes that appear throughout both discs are beautiful. Sleep Is A Curse just feels like one of those interludes expanded into an actual song.

Also, speaking of the wonderful melancholic songs, Geography takes the cake. Oh and Monstrously Low Tide. Geography's lyrics are so sad, and I really like it how he says 'Let me wash you', it must refer somehow to the Bath in question. That soaring guitar that goes over it at the end is beautiful. Monstrously Low Tide has SUCH a cool start, sort of angry, and then it gives way to that beautiful acoustic guitar riff. The female vocals are lovely.

That's one thing I'm wondering, will there be any female vocals on the new album? Seriously...her voice is one of the loveliest voices I've ever heard. The music NEEDS her voice, I hope she's still there when the next one rolls around. The male clean vocals are *almost* as good. ;)

There are a few moments I find slightly difficult to 'get'...particularly The Curve That To An Angle...it's so slow and takes along time to get going. Then it turns really minimalistic. I just find the song a bit hard to swallow...but it has some great moments.

Now...the ULTIMATE in goodness = Riseth He The Numberless (parts 1 and 2). Jesus almighty, they are monsters. I love the trumpet at the start of part 1, and the discordant riffage that creates such a numbing, bleak feeling. Then it builds to almost nightmarish proportions with the lead guitar going crazy...and then fades...into people screaming in the distance. Man, give's me goosebumps...then it leads into that sweet sounding melody of part 2. These two songs put together are masterful. Part 2 is just as angry, monstrous and powerful as part 1. It just amazes me how MoTW can cover so many moods in their music.

Like Girl With A Watering Can...the mood at the start is so soothing and lovely. Then it swells warmly until it feels like the music is enveloping you...and the female vocals are fantastic. It King Crimson-ish with that guitar solo, the best on the album, amazing, so futuristic and soaring. The whole song is an exercise in the EPIC. No other song I can think of is both so epic and so heart-felt. Stunning.

But if there is one song that deserves praise, it is THE song. My favourite song, possibly ever, for months so far, Catharsis of Sea Sleep from the debut album. If there was ever a song you would find me poetically wanking over it would be this. I love it how the lyrics and theme's of the song so PERFECTLY complement the music. A swell rolling in the distance at the start of the song, rising slowly, the drums entering, and the tinkling sounds of the ocean and sun personified in the guitars cascading around you. Then the roar comes in, which although is agressive, perfectly complements the sad and pensive mood of the song. Then we go on a further journey underwater, madness and claustraphobia closing in. After being trapped for a while in cacophony, we are suddenly thrust back into the light, clean vocals, the song soaring majestically.

Catharsis of Seasleep = The best song anyone has ever written ever.

Well that's enough slobbering...I guess I'm a pathetic fellow or something like the Dark Tranqillity nutheads, but I really feel that way about Maudlin of the Well's music. There is NO other band that I listen to that makes me feel how MoTW does. Simple as that. My favourite band.

...is that enough or should I write more?

Hey what fun is the world without town idiots!? Their loveable...

Hmmm...now where are all of the people who want to discuss the intricacies of MoTW...STOP HIDING DAMN YOU!!

hey thanks man!

It's simply the best solo! :p

IMO there should be some more solo's like that about. Theres a kind of lack of solos on the albums...but maybe that was intentional!?? Theres plently of futuristic guitar work, maybe though, it needs to soar more like it does in Girl With A Watering Can...and at the end of Geography. Man, those parts rule.

;)

It feels so weird to actually be talking to the people who make the music about it...:err: It's not as if Mikael ever shows up on the Opeth forum...the bastard...

you know i thought i put a solo on every song on those albums except for three of the interludes and the intro. or i at least did some kind of guitar texture.

i mean i love the girl with a watering can solo but my favorite is still heaven and weak or birth pains..

Ahhh, but if you do too much of one thing then it gets boring. I think a big reason there are certain sections of the music that stand out to different people is because it is so diverse. I personally am drawn to the acoustic sections of the music.

Oh yeah, there is one on Birth Pains...for some reason I've hardly listened to that song.

Well I guess I was just speaking from what stood out, and the Watering Can solo just stands imprinted on my mind.

There's quite a few solos, but often they are quite short and such, and the Watering Can one simply screams EPIC at me in capital letters.

I just think the solos feel sort of 'backgroundy' a bit much...and the Watering Can one sort of 'takes a hold' on the music and soars over it. Besides that, I think the textures of the guitars are their best aspect, so often they really explore places sonically that so few attempt. They are certainly done in a very refreshing and original manner...futuristic springs to mind.

Then again, as was said, it's good they aren't done too often, for the diversity is the key of MoTW.

(I'm probably rambling some complete bullshit here ;) )
