Sit back a tell your tale of various distortion type you've had/use to get your sound. Either in pedal form, rack gear or straight out of the amp..

I own:Zoom Tri-metal
Boss metalzone
Boss DS-1 (a classic)
Ibanez Ts-808
Boss Blues Driver
For practice I use the tri-metal for the modern, heavily saturated sound. The metalzone for the old school metal sound, great for thrash and solo's.The DS-1 for playing Vai and Satriani stuff. The TS-808 and the blues driver(which was modded by me) for blues. I also have A JCM2000 TSL with Mesa tubes in it(go figure) and just use that with no pedal in front..

I recommend the Zoom tri-metal..Sam Ash has them on clearence for 50 bucks and it buries the metalzone for availble gain, plus it's EQ is easier to tweek...

I had a Boss Metalzone a few years ago. It totally owned. :D

My current setup is:

Digitech rp300 + Peavey VTM120 + A Marshall 4x12" cab.

The RP300 has some nice distortion settings, but I still miss the Metalzone.

As for mucho distortion, plugging the Metalzone into the Peavey's high gain channel - Don't get much phatter than that. :D

I'm feeding my guitar trough a modded DOD 250 in my computer with a program called Alien Connections Revalver...

If I want a different distortion I simply tweak the knobs.

Kate Bush Rules! said:
You want dat mud sound on yo bass.

Doesn't have to be muddy neccessarily. For example,

Tony Levin in LTE (Kindred Spirits, Paradigm Shift)
Billy Sheehan (That overdriven distorted solo tone he has)
John Myung (overdriven sound in the Dance of Eternity solo)

Distortion: not just for guitarists! :loco::p

I used to have a Boss DS-2 back in the day.
Then, got hold of a Korg AX-30G - decent processor, but a bit too digital sounding.
Now I have a Boss GT-6. I don't think I've ever heard anything better.

The evolution of my distortion:

DOD Supra Distortion pedal (my first one!!)

DOD FX20 preamp/effects processor

DOD Death Metal Distortion pedal (not too shabby)

Boss Metal Zone (who hasn't owned one these days?)

Marshall MG100RCD amp head

Line 6 POD

Rocktron Gainiac (I actually wasn't too impressed with this. I'm back on the POD).
