I just threw some tracks together to demonstrate the main problems with drums I'm facing all the time, so please ignore the drunken playin^^
And yeah, I know the vox are off-key most of the time :goggly:

Nothing on the 2bus except a G-Comp at .3/auto r, doing max 3db on the doublebass parts.

Problem #1: Toms distort @ 0:17. Now I've tried to automate an EQ so they don't clip there but it's taking all the essential meat away from the toms.

Problem #1: On fast doublebass parts the kick just bursts out and is somewhat clouding the whole mix through these parts, maybe barely noticeable, it's like a "lowend bubble" around the mix, dunno how to describe this any better, "effect" starts @ 0:40.
I tried a steep HP filter at 50hz on the kick, it helped but still the effect is very present. Of course I want the kick to remain punchy so I didn't filter any higher...

I'm sure you all know what I mean, seems like common problems.
Any workarounds besides the stuff I mentioned above?
What do you normally do to bypass this?

Thanks!

I think most people automate a couple dBs EQ cut on the tonic just on the fast fills. Otherwise I dunno. I think its a fantastic drum sound tho (hihat sounds terrible though). I can hear the 'bubble' at :40. Have you sidechained the bass, so the kick's lowend can cut through more?

For the tom problem, can't you just cut out the hits that distort and replace them with either sampled hits or hits from another part of the song?

If something like that happens to me, and I don't have samples of the drums to work with, then I just find a good part in the song to take a sample from and replace it manually.

Use a higher release and lower attack time for the kick. You can automate the settings so you don't sacrifice the kick's power on slow parts.

That's the weird thing. It doesn't distort on fast fills. Only on those low fat floor toms that go along with the kick at the same time.

I don't sidechain. I want the bass to be focused even on doublebass parts.

And yeah, the hihat sucks balls, it's the EZDrummer one :guh:

It's always "just" distorting on the ultra cracky hard tom hits. So you basically suggest to replace it with a softer hit that simply doesn't clip?

I've always used compression for the kick, not so much for the drumbus. Depending on the song you can try 15-30 ms attack, 3-6:1 ratio, 20-150ms release, adjust the threshold for 3-6db of reduction or according to your personal preference. Use similiar compression for the toms and you can add a limiter on the tom tracks.
