Do I really need to turn the amp up to 10?

There was a rather nice thread (about this sort of thing) a while back:

Effects of master volume (shootout)

The files are down, so I've uploaded them to my Dropbox public folder:

Thanks to Deaf Ear for doing the shootout. :headbang:

*The Dropbox upload was unusually quick (probably closer to instantaneous as it didn't actually seem to be doing any uploading at all), so I hope that the links work. -_-

You shouldn't have to crank the amp to 10 to record. Like everyone said, find the sweet spot. I find most amps I played, this spot lies around 3-6 on Master Volume.

The only way i can see cranking it up to 10 is if you are playing out of a old Fender tube amp and want to sound punk. Otherwise, use youe pre/post gain to get your distortion, and/or use a tube screamer.

^^^ I just normally plug my guitar into my Laney and play. Maybe I should add something in front to tighten the sound.

I was blown away by how much my Maxon od808 tightened up the sound of my 5150. I can't even play my amp without one now, never mind record it!

Yeah I threw a TS in front of my 5150 and Mark IV and I won't play either of them without it ever again....unless it's a clean part where I turn the TS off....

Ok, now since I don't have any of these pedals.... (don't shoot me please). I used a pod x3 (is it really that bad?) and used the scream, gate and comp on that to kinda tighten up the sound. I moved the mic from bang in front of the cone to the side. And the amp volume was at maybe 3.5 I think and this is what I got.

Absolutely raw with NOTHING done to it.

With some stuff I think made it sound better.

I'll give it a listen when I get home.

To me, it's irrelevant what you put in front of an amp if the result is something you like. If it sounds good it shouldn't matter what you used to get there.

Badass music/video by the way! Love it.
