More specifically what delay Rutan used on his leads, because it sounds incredible.
I know most people don't really like this mix, but it's nice to hear someone do something genuinely different now and again.

As far as I know he uses the Powerball on alot of his stuff (like the last Corpse album)
and also plays it live, but I am not 100% sure about that.

He blended the Powerball with one of Pat's dual recs, IIRC....I somehow remember it being a dual rec because they couldn't get the exact tone they were going for out of his triple rec that he uses pretty much exclusively. He had a dual rec as a backup and they plugged it in just to see how it contrasted and it ended up being better for the blend.

I saw the 'making of' dvd once, so this is going off of what I think I remember from that.

Nah it's just his triple rec with either a TS or hm-2, can't tell which. They used the engl for leads only. I have watched that making of dvd many, many times :loco:

Yeah, I think he "learned" alot from Trey's visions.
I don't exactly agree with this. Listen to the difference between what he did and what Trey did on "Gateways To Annihilation". Two completely different styles. Trey is more...almost...improvised and just unworldly (as he was going for), while Erik tended to really imply themes. Both were heavy wah users. Erik came up with tasteful harmony peices that he would double track in order to get the right vibe, while Trey would occasionally use a harmonizer pedal but it definitely sounded like he was just using a pedal.

Also, when Erik did "Conquering The Throne", he didn't really seem to be influenced by what he was doing in Morbid Angel. Somewhat unrelated...but I was also impressed that Doug Cerrito didn't seem to bring too much Suffocation into it either. I liked how they both made an album that sounded nothing like the two respective bands. Nothing wrong with either band, it's just cool sometimes to hear people put stuff out in different bands that isn't an exact copy of something else they already did.

Mind you, I'm only comparing what they were doing at the time. I think Trey is great, but I kinda preferred Erik's style over his. It seemed more that Morbid Angel was influenced a little more by Erik being in the band at the time than anything.

Yeah i don't really think Erik has been influenced by Trey at all when it comes to lead stuff. I mean they have both always had a very unique style, with trey being a complete mindfuck and Erik having very recognisable melodic sensibilities.

My biggest complaint with "Fury And Flames" is that with how good of a producer Erik has been, making so many releases have a very clear and powerful sound (IMO)...he made this album sound so weird. Guitars are almost hard to pick out the intricacies of what is being played. Showboating that Alex Webster played on the album, yet you can't make out what he's doing half of the time. A little overly drum heavy. Just seems a little mushy.

I suppose all the HE albums have had akward productions. "Conquering The Throne" had pretty decent production that kinda added to the atmosphere of the material (which I like, when the production contributes to the vibe). "King Of All Kings" seemed to have little low end to it except for the kicks, almost no bass present. "I, Monarch" was pretty decent, had a weird drum production though.

This. I hate the fact that it's got over-the-top low end mush and the drums bury the guitars. And that he gloated about having Webster on the album but he's pretty much completely buried.

If it had the production of I, Monarch with a more cutting bass tone, it would have been perfect.
