I haven't heard any doom metal. Where do I go about checking it out? What are some band names? Who likes it?

go to www.doom-metal.com. They break it down to classifications, describe each style, and list some of the best bands for each style. My personal favorites are from both the stoner/doom and depressive doom (I'm sure that's not a real classification name, but it aptly describes). I like Sabbath-inspired bands like Reverend Bizarre, Cathedral and Ogre, but also dig the depressive, gothic side like My Dying Bride, Fall of Empyrean, Shroud of Bereavement, old Anathema, and Swallow the Sun. Candlemass fucking rules! They're considered epic or traditional doom, though.

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
The Dreadful Hours
Like Gods of the Sun
The Angel and the Dark River
Songs of Darkness, Words of Light

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Paranoid
Volume 4.
Masters of Reality
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Heaven and Hell

Novembers Doom - Any
Swallow the Sun - Any
Paradise Lost - Any
Candlemass - Any
Draconian - Any

The Dreadful Hours by My Dying Bride is definitely worth checking out. Slumber's Fallout is amazing. Other good bands are Saturnus, Rapture, Lethian Dreams, Draconian, Ningizzia, Swallow The Sun, Dark Lunacy, Katatonia (old)and Daylight Dies.

Try also Empyrium's Songs of Moors and Misty Fields if you like folk music.

I hope my post is helpful to you.

You can't really go wrong with any My Dying Bride except that percentage album (can't ever remember the name). The earlier stuff like "As the Flower Withers" was Death/Doom, then with "Turn Loose the Swans" they alternated death vox and clean vocals which eventually led to all clean vox on "The Angel and Dark River"-my personal favorite. They returned to alternating vox on "Light at the End of the World" and stay with that ever since, although the new one has more clean. Also, everything up and including "Like Gods of the Sun" (saw them on that tour with Dio in America) had both violin and keyboards. The one after had some violin, then Martin left for Anathema. He now plays in Cradle of Filth.

Try Funeral - From These Wounds
or Novembers Doom - Novella Reservoir(for death/doom), Pale Haunt Departure
and almost everything Bassem mentioned above. There's so many to mention and one of my fav. genre's.

Evoken - Quietus & Antithesis of Light

("Where Ghosts Fall Silent" being my favourite song of theirs)

&

diSEMBOWELMENT
(The song "Cerulean Transience of All My Imagined Shores" being my recommendation)
