This is the most natural mix I've done in a really long time. Only two guitars instead of multiple layers, no drum samples, no gates, no mercy. I'm very happy with this but would love your thoughts.

We wanted it to sound big, open, natural, and nasty without it being overly raw or under-produced.

Sounds pretty cool to me. The mix works as is, but I think stylistically I would prefer the guitars to have less high mid and to be more of an extreme distortion type sound, maybe with a bit more lax mids. Then again I tend to like the more heavy end of doom, but Electric Wizard is more stonery and they have that sort of guitar sound I am thinking of. Good job on the bass, what was done?

EDIT: actually now that I said that, the vocals do not match the guitars and drums in brightness, so they sound off. Due to the genre, this may have been intentional, but I thought I'd let you know anyway.

Thanks, guys! The vocals are actually what I'm happiest with, I think that their tone and placement works well for what they do. Dude sounds evil as hell. They actually wanted more reverb and distance, I had to fight for what I got. Regarding guitar tone, we wanted an "old" sound, so we opted for relatively low gain with a focus on body. There's a ton of Studer tape saturation all over this, particularly guitars and drum bus, courtesy of Nebula. This might explain the lack of highs some of you are sad about.

Bass was DI. Can't remember what he played but he went into my Fulltone OCD, then Sans Amp RBI, then... I think it was an API 512 DI, then Distressor. It was like 1:30 AM and we were reeeeaaally high.
