Trust me, being very close to this incident (in a physical and work-related way) I can tell you that the mistakes that were made on the Deepwater Horizon were mistakes that never should have been made. Common sense issues were blatantly ignored by BP's engineers and representatives - day one well control mistakes were made. These mistakes cost 11 hard working men their lives, crippled an ecosystem for years to come, and cost tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people their jobs and livelihood. Now the region of the United States that has barely (and in some cases, not yet) recovered from Katrina is crippled by a man-made disaster and the federal government (while extremely quick to bail out banks and the auto-industry for still unknown reasons) is standing by and watching this disaster unfold. I am fully and deeply disgusted with what BP has done, but as far as recovery efforts go, they are making legitimate efforts to help the people in need. Granted the money may be coming a little slower than people would like and I understand their feelings, but the government is doing nothing to help. Meanwhile, environmentalists (sorry, they're not really all that concerned with the environment, only with profits - just like oil companies) are sitting on the sidelines licking their chops knowing that this will result in sweeping policy changes that will help them sell solar panels and wind turbines (while increasing our dependence on oil from "friendly" Arab nations that are quite blatantly stabbing us in the back).......rant over.
