i know this is a maidens board, but i figured since you are fans of female singers of heavy metal bands, you might find this interesting, too.here's a copy of an email i just sent to my best friend up in seattle. he's the only one i know that would appreciate this:

omigod, it was unreal! LOL i took a nap and overslept by one hour, so i was totally gonna miss the first 20 minutes of her set. turns out, she went on late and i was actually there EARLY. the deutsch gods were with me that night LOL the whisky is fucking TINY and it wasn't terribly crowded, either (who knows who doro is in the US?). so any spot in the venue is a great spot where you can see the stage (back of the floor, side of the stage, upstairs by the railing).

but first things first: doro still looks amazing! she's obviously taken care of herself. she's still thin and her arms had muscles. she didn't stand still for the entire set. she's a ball of energy: headbanging with her blonde mane, shaking hands with the front row, etc. she still wears lots of leather and metal studs. her voice was still as powerful as it was 20 years ago (i told her that later), just like on the albums. when she first came out she yelled "how's your power?!" LOL love her thick german accent. she introduced almost every song and sometimes it was even hard to understand her. the set was heavy on classics from her old warlock days, with about half being from her solo years (and newer songs). they all rucking rocked. her band was great. lots of energy. there were plenty of sing-alongs for the crowd (as all heavy metal shows should have LOL ). the awsome drum solo even had a sing-along (to the tune of the intro to KISS' "i love it loud"). doro really knows how to work the crowd, whether it's letting the fans sing into her mic during the chorus (which she did often) or encouraging them to throw their fists in the air or clap. she's got great stage presence. i can see why she's still so popular in europe. she still puts her heart and soul into the music and live show. pretty good for a lady who just turned 43 earlier this month and has been touring for 24 years (since 1983!

security was really cool and friendly. they let everyone stay after the show to meet doro. i bought a $25 shirt with warlock's "triumph & agony" cover art. my drinks were only $9 (while they'd be $12-$13 at the dance clubs i frequent). earlier, i chatted with a cool guy i'd seen at the iron maidens shows who used to be the singer of an aerosmith tribute band. doro really took the time out to meet her fans after the show. she crouched down by front stage and signed autographs for about 15 minutes, and then walked over by the exit door for about another 20 minutes taking pictures & signing more autographs. and she didn't rush the fans along. she chatted with each and everyone for at least a couple minutes (to everyone else's dismay that were waiting in line and afraid security was gonna give us the boot LOL ). i yelled "schnell!" a couple of times LOL when i finally got to meet her, i noticed her piercing baby blue eyes. they're like the ocean. i told her i'd been waiting 20 years (since i was 14) to see her live! she told me the hasn't been to the states since 2000, when she toured with dio & yngwie Malmsteen. i told her i saw dio with iron maiden and that he was shorter than i was LOL she seemed to be about 5'2" at most. i believe i told her "ich liebe dich" and thanked her for still rocking. she said something like "of course!"

her set lasted from about 11:30PM-1:30AM. i left the club at 2AM and got to bed by 3AM. i had to get up for work at 8:30AM. today's gonna be tough, but at least i get out at 3:30PM.

it really was surreal seeing her. waiting so long to see an artist that i've loved (and was sometimes obsessed with) since i was 14. another life-long dream come true! LOL i think i had a smile on my face for about half the show, knowing what a rare treat it was to see her (and at such a tiny venue).

i want to thank Juliet Randall of the band rusty eye who opened that night (sorry i missed their set). she mailed me my $10 discount ticket (normally $17.50). i never would have even known about the doro show if she hadn't of randomly spammed me on myspace (because i left doro & warlock as one of my favourite 80's metal bands.

here's the set list to the best of my recollection (i may have left a couple of her newer songs out):

blurry pic of doro onstage

she did a lot of headbanging and whipping her blonde mane around. i hope i still have that kind of energy in another 10 years.

me with Tommy Bolan (guitarist from 1987's "triumph & agony). he played the last couple songs onstage. he said he was the first american in her band (from brooklyn, NY i believe he said).

me with the queen of metal herself, doro pesch. in my opinion, she was the only female 80's metal singer of a band that i really liked (lita ford was a solo artist in the 80's). she had a the voice of a screaming banshee, long blonde hair, natural sex appeal (but never over-the-top). i can check another one off my "to-do before i die" list LOL

thanks for the kinds words, metallicat. i have that "live at camden palace" show in london on VHS. they've now got it on DVD (with improved video quality) and an audio version of the show on the flipside. i woulda liked to hear:

out of control
you hurt my soul
three minute warning
and a few more from her first two solo albums...

Doro rocks! Wish I would've known about it - I would've liked to have seen her live and had a chance to meet her. There's a reason she's been around as long as she has - and your story amply illustrates why. Thanks for being our eyes and sharing your experience with us, Eric.

linda knew about it. i saw her respond to one of the opening band's myspace event invites. so you can blame her for not telling you! haha i actually was thinking about you last night. she's such a force onstage, both her voice & stage presence, i was thinking to myself, "aja should be here!" haha yeah there's a reason she's been around so long. people like lita ford have dropped off the face of the planet, yet doro's primary focus was always the music, the fans, and the live show. thanks for taking the time to read my lengthy review.

You're welcome! :D

The dvd says there's a few bonus tracks but I have no idea how to access them which is annoying!

Jeez......why r u ratting me out like that? :Shedevil:

Ya, I was invited to go see my friend open for Doro but was unable to go. She's a fellow female drummer named Lux and plays for a band called Sacred Storm, who played that night, and Mystery Hangup. She's a waay kewl drummer!!!!!!!!

Glad Doro delivered yet again. I met her many years ago in the Phantom Blue days and she is a total sweetheart and about the same height as me! She rules! Glad you had a good time Raveballs! Wish I was there!

I'm suppose to be going to the Saturday San Antonio show...One of the guitar players is a friend of The Eddies fanzine so we'll see if that pans out.

busted! haha love the "shedevil" icon... you'll have to answer to aja now. you've got drummer's guns, but aja's got the karate training. plus she's taller ;) haha you're what, 5'0"? yeah, i mentioned that doro's probably 5'2", but that's with boots on...

She does a storming version of that!! Did it start off slow and then blast into it?

yes it does, just like on the "classic diamonds" cd. she even mentioned Udo Dirkschneider by name while introducing it LOL

i'm adding to the list of songs i woulda liked to hear live:

Mission of Mercy
Alive
The Fortuneteller (very moody number)

   Actually it was more like wishful thinking on my part - this has been a crazy week so I prolly wouldn't have been able to make it anyway. I never go anywhere it seems except to a gig! :hypno:

I saw Doro at the Chicago show last weekend and it was awesome. I met her during the Dio Tour and when I met her last week, she still remembered me. That woman has a very good memory. I have to say Doro is the whole reason why I love women in leather!!!!! I have loved women in leather since the first time I saw her in leather in the heavy metal magazines back in the day.... Doro is the true Metal Queen that is for sure!!!

Seen WARLOCK Feb 2nd 1988 w/ BASTILLE and TEAZER in San Diego, CA...great show.:kickass:

And then seen DORO w/ METAL CHURCH, FLOTSAM & JETSAM, PRIMAL FEAR, SEVEN WITCHES @ the BRAVE WORDS & BLOODY KNUCKLES 6 Pack Fest II in Cleveland, OH June 2-4th 2004. Yet, another great show...Thanx Doro...:notworthy

I went to check her out last night...If there were more than 100 people there, I'd be surprised...really too bad. Metal is definitely dead in San Antonio.

It was fun meeting her guitar player Luca from The Clairvoyants in Italy and seeing Johnny Dee and Doro herself again after all these years...The only down side to the night was that they didnt play Love Me In Black...bummer.

Oh well....I wish more musical acts could be that energetic and enthusiastic...consummate performer and a pleasure seeing her live again after nearly 20 years...wow..
