This is a quote from Kevin Shirley on just that subject:
Oh, Dream Theater Live at Budokan DVD and CD came out - it's awesome BUT make sure you set the audio mode very carefully otherwise it will not impress you sonically - it took me three separate occasions to get it right! The default is to 5.1 with some fake surround shit, make sure

you deselect that. The 5.1 is not necessarily encoded the way it was in the studio - we're looking into it, and will keep you updated.

I don't own any of the above, so I can't comment. What I can comment on is how terrible sounding my last two Dream Theater concerts have been in Milwaukee. The music is just sooooooo overly loud and distorted, it hurts even with earplugs at the very back of the venue. I've heard others comment on the same thing. Other bands at the same venues put out a much better sound, so I don't know how much I can fault the venue for the acoustics. If the Budokan gig was played with the same maddening loudness and distortion of the shows I witnessed, I don't know of any producer who could make them sound good - short of going back to the studio and re-recording troublesome "live" parts.

All you folks disappionted with the new DT live release should go out and buy the new Fates Warning. Production perfection!!! Their best CD, IMO.
